Actually they were called CARPETBAGGERS. They were people from the North who went to the South after the Civil War. They took advantage of the fact that most southerns were wiped out financially so for very little money they could buy property and land at tax auctions. They also moved into politics by buying the votes of starving people and then using their political office to line their pockets with public money. The name carpetbag comes from the material used to make the
bags. Without military horses to make saddles for saddlemakers took to buying old carpets, cutting them into pieces and sewing them into suitcase-like bags. Even today in the South the term is used to refer to
Yankeescoundrels who look to make profits in the South.
