When you arrived in that room, you should have heard a few tones, plus seen some sparkling lights. This indicated that you needed to destroy all the monsters in the room to cause something to happen - it's one of the new features in the game. In this case, you do this by grabbing the shields, and hitting each monster... OR sacrificing three lives and not use the shields
. Once you do that, the gateway opens.
