Sorry to reply that late - but I only saw this entry now (Feb. 20, 2011).
It IS definitely possible to avoid being killed by this bird, otherwise I wouldn't leave something like this in one of my mansions.
In fact I avoid the bird EVERY single time I take that elevator. As Semi-Native said, it's only a question of where on the platform you stand, and maybe knowing when to duck a little.
I feel the bird is slow enough for the player to see it coming.
