When riding the elevator down to room 14706 Jack died because of a red bird, which seemed impossible to avoid. CD....no?

The trick is to stand on the far left of the platform, and duck.

It happened again only this time it occurred when the elevator was almost completely out of the room. But this time it was a Scorpion and it definitely NOT possible to avoid as Jack was below ground. (Sorry I posted original in the wrong place!)

Sorry to reply that late - but I only saw this entry now (Feb. 20, 2011).

It IS definitely possible to avoid being killed by this bird, otherwise I wouldn't leave something like this in one of my mansions.

In fact I avoid the bird EVERY single time I take that elevator. As Semi-Native said, it's only a question of where on the platform you stand, and maybe knowing when to duck a little.
I feel the bird is slow enough for the player to see it coming.
