Title: Member groups
Post by Freddy on 23.12.2006 at 19:25:12
At last I deleted ALL sheriff stars. Anyone who has objections ... will be banned from the boards. ;D

Meanwhile I gave different colours to the 5 member groups. Those colours may change later in function of the complete lay-out of the boards.

1° Lost One = purple
2° Wanderer = green (> 49 posts)
3° Explorer = navy (> 99 posts)
4° Adventurer = teal (> 249 posts)
5° Treasure Hunter = maroon (> 499 posts)

But in the old site it was:
Lost one, 0 to 9
Wanderer, 11 to 49
Explorer, 50 to 99
Adventurer, 100 to 499
Treasure Hunter, 500+

Thats EXACLY the way it was and I think you forgot! ;)
And if you want, you can add a position at 250 to 499. :)

I think it would be kind of bad to still be the in the worst position with say- 35 posts!
You don't have to change it, but it would resemple the old site more if you did. ;)

And I think the colour ideas are great! Maybe if you make a position between Adventurer and Treasure Hunter, make it red? :)

EDIT: Wait a minute! Red is for Admins! Oops. Er,,,  can you think of another colour?

Since you are so sure about it, I am certainly going to change that. I really didn't know it any more and I only used the 5 degrees that YaBB offered.

You are right that it is possible to add one or more degrees. I have a look at it.

I like the different colours as well. But for the definite choise of the colours I have to wait for the finalization of the lay-out from our boards. And red is maybe not a good idea, since I need two colours as well for the global moderator (Vern) and the administrators (= red now). But that may change of course.

Hey Wingy, you look so ... green.  :-[

Thanks to Wingy I was able to reproduce the original numbers of posts needed for "promotion". I also added a 6th degree, above Treasure Hunter. The colours may change later in function of the complete lay-out of the boards.

1° Lost One = purple
2° Wanderer = green (> 9 posts)
3° Explorer = navy (> 49 posts)
4° Adventurer = teal (> 99 posts)
5° Treasure Hunter = maroon (> 249 posts)
6° Expedition Leader = orange (> 499 posts)

Expedition Leader! I like it! :D

EDIT: I feel fine, Freddy! 8-)

Lost One (> 2 posts) ???

How would you call those with exactly two posts then? (Now now, where is the geek smiley?  ;))

I should also point out that I strongly disapprove of the colour scheme  [smiley=tongue.gif] (I have to check for details, but I'm pretty sure that at least two of these look the same to me. Not that it actually matters, mark you.)

Wanderer is at 15 posts!  :o

@ Wingy: Sorry! A wanderer really starts at 10 posts.

@ Toybox:
YOU are the mathsman. Please, tell me what is wrong with my list! A Newbie has less than 2 posts. That means 0 or 1. And a Lost One has more than 1. That means 2, 3, 4, ...
And I have good news for you. The colours will change after the finishing of the layout of our boards! ;)

Well, in France (at the time I learned at least  ::)) the terminology "less" meant "less than or equal to", and "more" meant "more than or equal to" (otherwise you would say "strictly [less or more]). Apparently, everywhere else, "less" and "more" supposes in particular "different than".

However, the symbols "<" and ">" always denote strict inequalities. Therefore, your interpretation of "less than 2" and "more than 1" is both correct and wide-spread.

Now, if you experience trouble with this whilst administrating the forum, it could come from a difference in the point of view of whoever is programming the whole thing, in which case -good news- he or she is wrong  ;D

I have meant global moderator am perhaps the highest level which one achieve can (or even Adminstrator! )

:o :-?

As a "normal" forummember the highest level (now) is Expedition Leader. You can't become an Administrator or the Global Moderator unless you are asked for by Vern. Vern is by the way the only Global Moderator himself, because the boards are his! He is the one who is paying money, so that we have our forums.

You will also notice that being Global Moderator or Administrator has nothing to do with the number of posts.

I think you gotta be a good boy/girl and stuff... and ask him, and maybe, JUST maybe, if you're good with forums and stuff and responsible, he'll turn you into one with *magic!* :P

@Admins: I was wondering if you could add more positions? Like at 1000 and 2500? I will grow out of orange, you know! (Please no pink or purple!)  ;D ;)

Title: Re: Member groups
Post by Freddy on 02.05.2007 at 01:19:36
I must confess that several weeks ago, I was also thinking about adding one or more new member groups. But finally I decided of NOT doing it, because I was and still am afraid that there could be members for whom making posts become a target on its own.

As admins we have to keep in mind that we have forummembers looking for answers "by reading posts only". We prefer to let them scroll in a limited number of posts. So what we need are posts with messages, Q&A ...

I'm fully with you, Freddy !!

(Maybe that cuts some of the post traffic down to what's really essential....!)

Here is the member group upgrading system as it has been for quite a while now:

Jack's Secundant  YellowGreen  2000

Expedition Leader  Orange  1000

Treasure Hunter  Maroon  500

Adventurer  Teal  250

Explorer  Navy  100

Wanderer  Green  25

Lost One  Purple  1

Newbie  Gray  -1

The -1 is used to prevent newbies to be able to post without permission.  When a newbie asks an admin to be upgraded to Lost one this number is changed to 1.
