Title: SC1-2 > StarCraft
Post by Wingy on 09.01.2007 at 01:25:15
This mansion is called StarCraft. It's going to have to have custom art, which I'm working on. Here's a screenshot of a room. Bty, the mansion's name is StarCraft because most of my art is related to the awesome masterpeice by Blizzard Entertainment... StarCraft :: Broodwar.

Here's the screenshot:

As you can see, the money is abit different, and Jack is stuck on a space platform! In the game StarCraft, you need Minerals, (Blue Crystal) and Vesvain Gas. (Gas Containers) Also, there's no life up there but Jack. There's just robots in the way!

I'll finish it... in awhile.

;)

Btw... Have anyone ever played StarCraft? There's a free demo at this address:
http://www.blizzard.com/starcraft/macscdemo.shtml
Most of the bad guys are not related to StarCraft,  :-/ but just robots. You need classic to play the demo. The full version you can get a installer to make is OS X.  8-)
I've been drawing new bad guys and tile sets for like... 5 hours?   ;)

@Vern: You said you couldn't edit sprites. Well uh... how come I can?

Looks pretty good, Wingy.

How did you manage to make another background than the ones included in the game?
I've been trying this for quite some time, without any sucess so far  :-/

Wingy, as I said before.... of course it is possible to edit sprites (in the Midnight Mansion Sprites resource map), it's just not possible to do it in the resource file of your mansion (as it is with tiles).

I'm currenty doing custom graphic sprites myself...and it's a lot of fun !!

Its easy to get another background, Frost! You simply get the image you want, like I went to StarCraft's Wallpaper gallery and got that one. If the image is too small, it automaticly makes it a pattern. Once you have your image, you rename it, background8.jpg (Rename the extention) and put it into: /midnight mansion (folder)/game data/screens/
Then when you select it in the editor, you can select another backround! You can keep renaming differnent images. (e.g. background9.jpg, background10.jpg) Remember, the image has to be .jpg or .png.  ;)

Title: Re: StarCraft
Post by Freddy on 09.01.2007 at 20:58:33
Backgrounds and music have to be handled in a similar way. The mansion will need an accompanying read-me-first textfile with instructions for adding the backgrounds and/or the music at the right place(s). And you have to take care about RIGHTS. Don't use anything that result in bills send to Vern or whoever. Including yourself! ;)

Title: Re: StarCraft
Post by Wingy on 09.01.2007 at 21:17:57
I'm still confused with the music thingy... I renamed my own music, put it in the right place, told the editor to play it  in a sertain room, and I got a error window pop up when I played the mansion!  :'( :-? :-/

Title: Re: StarCraft ::: Jack with forcefeild!
Post by Wingy on 09.01.2007 at 22:41:42
I wonder... How on earth will Jack breath up there? I know! With a force-feild that prevents air from escaping and so Jack doesn't get torn apart in space!  ::) So basicly it's just Jack with a forcefeild on.
Wait until this mansion... er... space station is complete to find out!

Maybe I didn't express myself clearly enough - I'll try again:

Since update 1.0.7. it is possible to put  custom graphics of TILES (editor left) within the resource file of your mansion (= "StarCraft" in your case). You do not need to put the custom tiles into the "Midnight Mansion Sprites" resource file anymore (as it used to be in earlier versions).

But if you want to create custom SPRITES (editor right), like change the look of monsters or switches etc., you still have to do that in the "Midnight Mansion Sprites" file, unfortunately.... which you then have to give to the players along with your mansion.

That was what I meant when I said "edit in the resource file".... of course the real "editing" (=customizing the graphics) has to be done in PhotoShop or something like that.

Title: Re: StarCraft
Post by Wingy on 25.01.2007 at 08:40:48
Ok thanks for clearing that confusion up with me. Now about StarCraft...

I'm going to make sorta "episodes" of this mansion. Each time you finish you'll be teleported away. Not really, but you'll have to continue on with the story in the next "episode." It's going to be chopped up and going to be BIG. (I'm guessing, abit bigger then Volcanis) Not as big as MMaM though...
Anyways, I'll keep you all updated when I finish the first "episode!"  :D
Cheers,
Wingy  ;D

P.S. I might finish the first "episode" this Weekend!  :) You'll have all the costom Graphics and all this weekend!  :)

Here's a screenshot of one room. You may have noticed that the bar above is different and Jack is different. And the keys, too!   :)

Also you may have noticed the "elizabeth" "head" is different. She's riding the most powerful human unit, the Battle Cruiser. The "auther" "head" is riding a wrath, which is not as big. The only bad guy I didn't change was the momma spider. Also, I deleted all blood and acid and the sounds for them. But you can still hear the heads dying as the ship burns went they hit a torch!

@Wingy: What on earth is a Zerg dude ???  :)

It looks really great, my compliments, Wingy.

Too bad, I thought I'd be the first to have changed the look of Jack !!
Maybe I can still beat you to the release, as yours will be more impressive anyway.... you have even changed that bar / window frame...!!   :)

Your skill frightens me... what will become of you, when you're 23, or 33 ?!   A rocket scientist ???   :) :)

Title: Re: StarCraft
Post by Freddy on 25.01.2007 at 23:03:12
To make a few things clear for us.

1° Will StarCraft be build up like Volcanis? Will the second episode be added at the tail of episode 1? Etcetera.

2° When it will "be out", is it already beta-tested for release? Or does the tests start later today? If you are searching for beta-testers, just ask on these boards. (I found already one for the Catacoms Section 4. And that "one" is no less than the only Grandmaster of MMaM. Don't disturb her! ;))

3° A reminder. I suppose you want your new mansion, like all the others, listed. Then it is better that you don't attach it now to a post somewhere else on the boards (e.g. Free Up- & Downloading). On the long term that would be confusing.

Title: Re: StarCraft
Post by Wingy on 25.01.2007 at 23:06:12
Er umm... I dunno... But it naturally that people in my family are smart... I hope i am... My older bro, whos in his first year of univercity got 97% average in highschool. He spent most of his time in his room and talked to his friends. He developes games, like Vern! Not to sell, but just for fun. His latest game was "NOT ASTROIDS." Its a game about destroying asteroids and such. If you want to check it out, go to this address:

http://server1.yellowdns.com/~staron/NOT_ASTEROIDS/NOT%20ASTEROIDS.zip

Anyways back to StarCraft... If you've played the StarCraft Demo, you can see that the "Zerg dudes" are the bad aliens... If you look at the picture IN my screenshot, you can see a "Zerg dude."

And what Freddy Said...
I'm going to put it up on the Free up- & Downloading thing soon... and then everyone can play it and they can tell me bugs... Its got lots of custom graphics but only 10 rooms!!!

Wingy, I read that you removed certain sounds for certain effects (like blood) in the game. I wonder how you do that, as I'm looking for a way to remove the sound of the torches burning, but NOT the torches (+ animation) themselves.

I need it for the Disotheque's illumination.

Do you (or ANYBODY ELSE) know how that could be done ??

Title: Re: StarCraft
Post by Wingy on 26.01.2007 at 05:13:56
It's simple, aquaMat! Open "sounds" in ResEdit and just press "delete" or "backspace" on the sound you don't want!  ;D

Title: Re: StarCraft
Post by aquaMat on 26.01.2007 at 17:32:52
Oh well.... that sure is simple !!  :D

Of course I know how to erase a file on a Macintosh computer... ;D

But I had suspected that it could cause problems in the game, when I erase a certain sound, but CONTINUE to use the picture "attached" to that sound....(that was my question)...but apparently it won't. (??)

I made a first playing-test of STAR CRAFT Episode 1:

First of all, congratulations, Wingy, to the great graphics.
I have not yet played with the MUSIC ON, so I will comment on the music later, if you want.  :)

I like the graphics, with only a few minor exceptions.... like -for example- the force-field, which is great, but has the downside that it somehow decreases the "three-dimensionality" of Jack (meaning, he looks a bit 'flat' sometimes). But that's just my personal view.
Also I think you should add an "introduction": for example, by the time I realised that those red/green boxes are LEVERS, I had missed (not pulled) the first one....
I love the way you made new keys, coins etc. Great!!

However, I found a Jack-stuck in room 15900: After coming down again from above, I took that moving platform to the lowest floor and died in the acid. By the time I died, however, I had activated the lower floor moving platforms, but was reborn on the ladder above. I could NOT get down again, as the higher platform was not moving and blocked the way down, and I had NO way to change that.

However, I was lucky: after I suspended the game, and then resumed it, luckily the higher platform was moved to the floor again, and I could get down with a squirrel jump to the secret caveat and then jump to the lowest floor from that.
But STILL: you should change that. Normally I would have had to abort the game there.

But I could finish, and ended with 10.000 crystals or whatever it is, and 3 secrets (100%) and several lives left.

But it's rather short,so maybe it'd be better to release the mansion as a whole after it's finished.

One other thing: Your read-me on how to replace what in the Game Data folder is NOT very clear. Although I did understand what you meant, I think it could be written a bit more precisely (e.g. the confusion when you use the terms Data Original and Original Data folder etc.)

However, a great beautiful mansion, that turns MM into something entirely different.

If I may add something to this remark about the read-me-first-file. It would be nice to end the text with telling how to put things back to "standard". You don't need to repeat all the steps again. But say "something" about "undo". After StarCraft we really need to be prepared for Arevn's Mansion, Palace of Gore, Catacombs and The Discotheque which are all coming very very soon. That last one with new file-move-instructions ...

Took me awhile to make the animation of Jack hitting the bottons of the green/red machine. And the new keys, coins ect. took awhile on each. (about 5 mins each)

Its completly possible to get down it without suspending! It's just hard. I think I should make it just one two-square elevator.

Hey, I'm really enjoying the the Starcraft mansions but I have one little complaint.

The different combination of backgrounds, colours and the forcefield around Jack tends to hurt my eyes when playing. I find it a little too much and so I request a normal Jack if possible. I understand in the mansion's story that Jack need the forcefield to breathe, but I think my eyes would enjoy playing the game more if there wasn't quite so much stuff going on visually.

Is it possible to just have a normal Jack for little old me?

Thank you!!!

I'm afraid I'm gonig to postbone Episode 4 due to... I forgot! Due to something... Well it won't be out for awhile. If anyone here gets Episode 3 done with perfect score and all secrets, they can be called the first person to have beaten it with perfect everything!  ;D
