Title: World high scores
Post by Freddy on 29.01.2007 at 13:41:27
@ Vern:
It is not the most important thing in the world. But I wonder if it is possible to remove all scores of a certain Denis from the lists. I can't believe that it is possible to finish any of the included mansions in 12, 8 or 5(!) minutes. These feels like a kind of hacking-work. And is not honest for the players who did it in a fair way.

Does anyone know how it is possible to get more points?  I just finished Nightmare Mansion on Easy and I posted my score to the high score list.  7 of the 10 people have the exact same score with 100% secrets.  The high score has almost 5,000 more points with only 60% of the secrets, and the 2nd high score has about 175 more than the rest with only 10% of the secrets!!  How did they get those other points?

When you check all the world high scores, you will notice several odd scores. I asked the Big Boss to remove all the impossible ones, created by hackers. It feels too unfair to players who try to get into the top ten.

Part of the problem is:

1) The high score lists used to be unprotected, so a couple of years ago people could easily hack it. I'm not sure if they stiill can, but obviously people like Denis can probably change their system clock or somethign like that while playing in order to mess with the elapsed time.

2) Secret counts were fixed in some mansions. But old high scores weren't changed. So maybe some people had 100% secrets, but their high score only shows 88% or somethign like that.

I've tried to remove the obvious offending high scores, but honestly I don't want to waste much time "policing" the high scores list.

What do you think.... should the high scores be "reset" sometime, at some specific date, to give new players a chance to get on? Maybe reset once per year?

To make it even better, have a timer of how many days aprox. till reset.  :)

ABSOLUTELY ... NO. :o :o

In my younger days I succeeded in arriving in the top-ten of 22 of the 24 included mansions. And to say it with brell: "must brag". I am still multiple world record holder. I don't know any sport where world records got removed each year.

BUT

The weak point NOW seems to be the time. I don't know anything about manipulating computerclocks. But it made me think about the build up of the high scores.

If there should come a completely new WORLD HIGH SCORES TABLE I should suggest first to take the % secrets in account, only then the dollars and third ... the lives left ?!?! :-/

Just an idea.

See it already did no good... the player Denis has already posted new high scores on the mansions where his scores were removed from, and they are with impossible times.  Something needs to be done.

I would have thought that the finite king (or queen) is he (or she) who is number one on all three levels :-)

Thx for reporting Mikee. I did remove them.

Thanks Mikee. My first objective was to just get in all 24 top tens, but then I got hooked on achieving as many number ones. Unfortunately, I'm struggling with a couple because the current fastest times don't appear to be possible (Knight Mansion Easy & Castle Doom Normal). Also, for the life of me, I can't see how to beat Cathedral Towers Hard top score (74275).

Watch out, Brandon, I have my sights set on Knight Mansion Hard :-)

8-) It is nice to know that there are also players who are interested in the World High Scores. Although the exploring fun is certainly more important, it gives an extra dimension to our Midnight Mansion Game.

For the time being, I can't answer your question perfectly. Problem is, that there were a few original mansions where things did change. I remember a bug, a few with wrong counting of secrets and in the near future the 3 Falcon Manors will be seriously changed. And that has its consequences for the possible scores and % secrets.

Keep a little bit of patience AND, please report any strange or "unbelievable' scores over here. Once in a while I have a look at those things. And I received the rights from Vern to remove troll-scores.

So, I took notice of 3 mansions with problems. And I will have a look at them.

If he changes the mansion he cannot get on the high score list.

Hello Leon !

Welcome on our boards.

Yes, those world high scores! ::) Since a few weeks I am discussing this issue with Vern. We know how Denis is cheating, but for obvious reasons, I am not going to explain that here on the boards. :-X

It is not impossible that in (the near) future the system of those tables will change. And meanwhile, the only thing that can be done is, once in a while, remove all impossible scores.

And that is what I am going to do just right now. Hope it makes you happy again. :)

EDIT: Done. And I take note of the fact that Denis got no good scores yet in hard mansions!

Yes, Freddy, please reactiv the Highscore-list then Denis is cheating soo much. That's really stupid. Can you stop Denis that he not can make a result on the Highscore-list?!?  :-/

I really like how the Global High Scores list is first a race to see who can get all the coins and secrets, and then a race to see who can do it even faster.

I just maxed out House of Baron Garneau, and was surprised and pleased to find someone beat it nearly 10 minutes faster than I did!

Hi Alan,
good to see you back...!

Interesting that you say that. I have just re-played "House Of Baron G..."  HARD for the first time after a year or so. And while I never cared for the Global High Score Lists in the past, I was surprised to find myself directed automatically to that site by the game, once I finished HoBG HARD with 93% secrets in 65 mins. or so. (My best score so far...)

Normally I don't like it at all if software is linking me automatically to the internet .... but in this case it was a nice surprise.

Is that a new feature that you're automatically linked with that list, or did I just never have good enough scores in the past for that to happen...??   :-/   ::)   8-)

I remember the game used to ask in older versions, didn't it ?

Title: Re: World high scores
Post by Alan Falcon on 30.01.2008 at 16:59:19
aquaMat, the game should have a checkbox when you beat a mansion asking if you would like to submit the name you enter to the Global High Scores list.

HoBG is an interesting mansion to me because the original designer kind of abandoned it in a less than perfect (but mostly playable) state, and so a few of us designers picked it up to re-master it in different difficulty levels.  I must admit to having played the version that I did (Normal) because (unless I'm losing it in my "old age"  [smiley=birthdays.gif]) that was the one that I was tasked to re-master.  It was actually a very fun experience taking someone else's layout, concepts, and puzzles and trying to improve upon them and fit them together in a more cohesive way.  I'm not sure that any of our custom mansions or come from that same kind of Frankenstein's Monster DNA, but it would be an interesting experiment for a couple of willing participants.
