Title: Your favourite custom mansions
Post by brell on 05.02.2007 at 01:20:56
I am rather curious how people would vote for top ten custom mansions because, as has been stated, players are as different as the mansions and thus prefer one or more types above others.  Not trying to be offensive in any way, here is my top ten list (my own mansions being excluded, of course) based on things like how often I play them, general layout, difficulty (I prefer not too difficult), puzzles (finding secrets etc.) and more:

Catacombs
Doldrum Dungeon
House of Wonders
Midnight Mazes and Monsters
Matt and Joe's Intro
Matt and Joes Place
Mummy's Revenge
Temple of Tombs
The Mall
The Money Pit

I never said I disliked mansions which are not on my top ten.

Unsorted....and excluding my own mansions....here are my Top 10 (but as I write this off the top of my heead, I might have forgotten one or more that i really like, but haven't played in a long time....).

A Curioius Observatory
Foggy Forest Mansion
House Of Wonders
Catacombs
The Mall
Dr. Tronic's Zoo
Mummy's Revenge
TOTOMBS
The Money Pit
Scorpion Mansion  or The Great Escape   (can't remember which I liked better)

But anyway I'm not sure if that really tells us much..... lists like that.... ?!

EDIT (Feb 9, 2007): Since posting this list above, I've looked into my custom mansions list again, and have found I should add the following 2, as I loved them very much, when they came out:

Dragon Trap Hard
Matt + Joe's Place

In no particular order:

Midnight Mazes and Monsters
A Curious Observatory
Catacombs
Matt and Joe's Place
Mummy's Revenge
Temple of the Moon (except for those massive clouds of brown birds near the end that keep killing Jack)
The Great Escape
The Money Pit
Temple of Tombs
Echo Keep

These are all older mansions. I like a lot of the newer ones, but they haven't been around long enough to determine if I'll play them over and over. Some of them I haven't even been able to get through yet!   >:(

Dr. Tronic's Zoo

I can't decide the other ones! They're all so good!  :)

Yes, I loved Dr. Tronic's Zoo as well. One of my favorites was possibly a curious observatory, which I could never beat. :-[
I love the Idea of volcanis... eventually I just died but that mansion is cool too. My friends like the lost jungle, but like you guys say, there's too many drops.

I like ALL "finished" custom mansions, since I know how many hours of work went into them and although they all have better and minor points. So I am not making a top 10, but only want to make a special note about 2 of them.

My absolute favourite custom mansion is Psychotronic's A Curious Observatory. I told that so many times before, so that it isn't news at all. Its master puzzle, the thunderstorm (while I hate zapper beam stuff), the 2D-area etc. bring this mansion to an extremely high quality level. The only minor point is probably that it is not accessable for players who doesn't have the skill for hard-to-very hard mansions.

And then there is also Alexander's The Dalton Brothers. Because I am a "freak" of MM-novelties, I must confess that this mansion was really stunning in that way. It made all my own novelties fade to gray!

I don't have a top ten (yet)... but just now I'm playing Palace of Gore and I LOVE :-* it!  Just the right amount of puzzles, baddies and rewards and you NEVER :o know what's in the next room, so it keeps you guessing - FANTASTIC! ;D

You liked Doldrum Dungeon but not Korvak's Keep?!? :o

I think I did a much better job with the third one than the second.

Assuming you are asking me:

1.  I do not dislike mansions that didn't get on my top ten.

2.  The reason I put DD on the list but not KK is the gold/silver blocks puzzle in DD, which is, in my opinion, the best g/s puzzle in the game.

Oh, thank you so much, Suzanne.... I had feared already nobody'd like it...as nobody had ever talked about it anywhere on the boards....   :) ;)

Relieved,   8-)

Well - I keep having to go back to the second save point to try again and again and again... but I'll get on a bit further soon, I think!  Anyway, Jack is tired of dying and being reborn all the time, so I'd better do better, that's all!

My only confusion is not knowing, exactly, which way to go... so I keep doubling back and keep checking the map to see big gaping black holes here and there.  As I said, it's a super puzzle!

Thought I'd bring this thread back up. There's been many new mansions since and I'm curious. Also, what makes your top 10 so much fun?

I am not sure whether it is a good idea to open up this thread again since there are so many new mansions since it was started.  There are a few things I look at when I deem  mansion "good":

1.  Good puzzles
2.  High problem solving level (not quite the same as 1. IMO
3.  Good playability (no JS, HJS or CD's)
4.  Fun to play
5.  Skill-training (like ladder and squirrel jumps)
6.  Secrets can be found (Jack must not have to do unnnatural things to find them)
