Title: Whisky Bar
Post by Freddy on 20.02.2007 at 04:47:58
With a ... "shocking" novelty. Downloadable now at the List(s).

Peeping in the editor may lead to painful punishments! [smiley=evil.gif]

You said in the List:
...Jack get's colour blind and...

Is this a DreamLand takeoff? Because take-offers lead to pain punishments! [smiley=evil.gif]

;D

And why do your little experimental mansions go on the list immediatly and I had to wait some time for other mansions! It's no fair! You should wait or give a poll if it deserves to go on the list!  :-/

Good question. And the answer has nothing to do with your or my mansions.

As administrators we try to stimulate creativity. And for mansions to get listed our only demand is serious beta-testing. So I am sure you will understand the three following things.
1° I could list my mansion, because I was sure it was seriously tested. So Whisky Bar was NOT immediately on the List! You were only not aware of the existence of this mansion and the fact that it got tested.
2° The smaller a mansion, the easier AND the faster it gets listed. E.g. Arevn's Mansion ...
3° Any additional change of graphics, sound and/or music complicates the testings and the listing. See e.g. the most recent posts from joeb.

Do you seriously think that Freddy did not have his mansion beta tested first?  It is NOT a question of polls.  Take Arevn's mansion, TOM, for example.  When she sent it to me she already had it beta tested. I made some minor remarks and put it on the list after she made a few minor changes.  Then a player found a glitch that neither, the beta testers or me had noticed and she immediately fixed it and sent me the update, which I put on the list instead of the first version.  That is how this works.

Someone's got some asprin for Jack an me?
Freddy, I definitely have to find out how you managed it with the yellow door. Excellent!

This new verb, "to ToyBox", is it in dictionaries yet?  Of course, when I sent in the post above last evening, I had solved the bar  :) and believe me, no Toyboxing is needed  ;)

Wow... I was jumping everywhere until... I stepped onto something! Then I jumped onto something els and got a yellow key! Then I won! Took me 10 minutes approximately. I've got to say, someone's discovered another type of puzzle! That was very tricky! I gotta say... the type of the puzzle was as good as when you had to do push-ups to get keys from ToyBox!  :o

Part of the text made yellow by Freddy, to avoid probably spoiling fun

Oh moon of Alabama, we now must say good bye...

What, no Toyboxing needed? ::) I can't wait to play it  [smiley=evil.gif]

EDIT: I did it, and [smiley=evil.gif] indeed. I was, of course, very impressed by Jack's colour-blindness.... Mind you, if you had used a green key instead of a blue one, I would never have guessed what was going on  :D

Oh, and should I report a Jack-stuck for this mansion now? ;)

At last!! I was wondering who was going to say something about the lyrics. That deserves MORE congratulations than finding the two keys to open ... one door. The text is out of the Alabama Song from The Doors. The Doors, what's in a name!

I bet you can't find a Jack-stuck in my bar. But don't do an effort, because I assume that my Whisky Bar is a temporary mansion. I sent an email to Vern because this issue looks too much like a game-bug.

MM would be a hell if all designers should use this feature. So, please don't use it in any mansion you are making now. Let us wait what Vern says about it.

Hey Freddy....

you keep surprising me, time and again....  in this case the blue-yellow trick is amazing ...and the whole thing as well...took me 9 (highly frustrating) mins until I found it....

BTW: Moon of Alabama is, although The Doors have covered it, a song by Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht !!  (And of course I got the reference immediately   8-) )

How did you do it ???  Guess it'll take me enormous forces of willpower to keep me from looking into the editor...!!   ;)

Title: Re: Whisky Bar
Post by Freddy on 20.02.2007 at 23:49:49
Yes. That is the problem with all those oldies. It is somtimes hard to know from whom the original is, because the covers often became more popular. Anyway, the version from The Doors suits better with the doors in MM. ;)

I give permission to all players who really finished this mansion, to have a look in the editor. Peeping in the editor shows the position of the missing keys. But exposes NOTHING about this shocking novelty. You just see a door that you CAN'T open with the obvious right key.

How did you make the blue key open the bottom half of the yellow door??  :-?

This hint-question was made yellow by Freddy, to avoid probable spoiling fun.

Regarding the Jack-Stuck: you're right, it's not a real one, I see now how to unstuck him  [smiley=bath.gif] It is "easy", really.

(Quotation marks: it means it's easy once you know the [difficult] trick)

Title: Re: Whisky Bar

As for Alabama Song: I know it from Brecht & Weill too (I'm a fan ;)) I know only the Lotte Lenya and the Marianne Faithful versions  :-/

However, I agree that the Doors are more topical  ;D

Due to the kind of mansion I will soon move this topic and the Whisky Bar to the Free Up- & Downloading Board. I am just waiting for a reaction from Vern.

Alright!  Thanks Wingy. That hint was enough to show me where to look.
I still don't know how Freddy did that door trick, but it was a fun little mansion. :)

That was a mansion where I smiled from the moment I opened it to when I finished (2.39). Not as good as SemiNative's time but still ok for me - (old and directionally challenged!! - actually, mostly just old) and huge thanks to Wingy's jumping hint!!!).

Freddy you still haven't answered my question!  >:(

On the previous boards we had a pretty good system to cover hints. With YELLOW text. Members who wanted to read, only needed to highlight them. And, when others didn't want to see their playingfun spoiled by accident, they could continue with the main text.

Since the new boards are not so far yet, the Whisky Bar is probably a good moment to ask everybody to take care a little bit with hints in general. When members ask for hints (e.g. Jennerific about ACO) it is not easy to answer them, without exposing "everything" to the whole world. The same happened more or less in an other way with the eureka-feeling here about beating this tiny mansion. My Whisky Bar is soooo small that, in a matter of fact it only contains two pieces: a "shocking" novelty which is maybe based on a game-bug and an other nice unseen feature. All the rest is Jack walking around, pulling levers and opening coloured doors with keys that he found together with moneybags.

My personal opinion, Wingy, is that it wasn't your best idea to tell about the jump, especially since nobody had asked for a hint yet. The mansion is that small that your remark did reduce the playing-"frustrating"-fun from aprox. 10 to aprox 3 minutes. Please keep in mind that, after your very nice and clever beating of this mansion, still a lot of people need to start with it. And want to have their fun as well.

That brings me finally to your question, that while being only a ... question, now also spoils the second new piece in the Whisky Bar. (What was the reason that I did reduce the text-size. Something I didn't like to do, btw.) How on earth can I answer it? It is much too early now. Please give other players first the chance to solve this puzzle.

Meanwhile I am waiting for response from Vern about this issue. Depending from his answer, their may be three possibilities:
1° the mansion stays listed;
2° the mansion, including this topic, got moved to Free Up- & Downloading;
3° the mansion got removed completely.
That last one is the only solution when Vern should fix the game in a way that the mansion wouldn't work any more.

Conclusion, Wingy: :-X till I know more from Vern.

And try to see it this way. When a player knows in advance what the two clues are, then they will finish this mansion in 52 seconds. Which is really possible! But what fun is that? ::)

On most gaming forums, like Penny Arcade and the like, there's a [spoiler] tag for such things. I don't know how hard it would be to add it to the forums, but it's pretty common. The text inside the spoiler tags shows up as a blank box, and when you highlight the box, the text inside appears.

Erm, how about white text on the white background? Test:

***
test, test, test
***

Edited to add: that works MUCH better, imho, than the yellow did on the yellow background. For one thing, the hint is completely invisible. Also, the text shows up much more clearly when you highlight than the yellow ever did.
