Title: Midnight Mansion and the Great Games Experiment
Post by VernJensen on 04.03.2007 at 01:44:02
Recently, a new site was started, called the Great Games Experiment, that intends to be the "MySpace" for gamers. You post what games were your favorites (like Lode Runner, etc.) and then, based on what games you liked, you can see what other games you might like, based on what other people liked. (Think NetFlix.)

Anyway, I've just added Midnight Mansion to the listing:

http://www.greatgamesexperiment.com/game/midnightmansion

It starts off with a rating of 3.0 out of 5.0. My vote increased it to 4.0. Anyway, if you want to add reviews and ratings to increase the likelihood that the game will be seen somewhere on the site, feel free. But more importantly, check the site out and post about other games you've liked too.

I went to the site but couldn't find out how I rate it.

Hi Vern -

MM is the best - we'll stuff the ballot box!!!! ;D

I wish we could send a mass emailing to all the MM members so they could go there and rate MM. Possible?

Hi Brell -

Just click on the number of 'silhouettes' in the ratings box you want to give a particular game. I did register on the site - I don't know if that's why my vote counted.

(I'll rate it later...).

Best about the site is....that there we can see how you look....if that picture is really you, Vern ?!   :) ;)

Vern looks like a person who just finished university and on his way to his game programming job.  :) I look like a person who likes video gaming, designing and art.  :P But my mom would kill if I posted a picture of myself online until I'm 18.  :o

How do the tags work? MM has two tags: "Indy", and one that says "Montezuma Retro Dungeon Dark Castle 2D Platforme". That doesn't seem right, because it's all one tag (and "platformer" is spelled wrong). Shouldn't it be a bunch of seperate tags?

I was unable to figure out how to write a review of MM, so I wrote to the 'Contact Us' address Saturday PM EST. So far no answer. Apparently you do need to register to vote because when I got to the site today, it knew who I was and wouldn't let me vote again >:(

Funny, it's the same picture that comes with the game. I guess no one clicks on About screens anymore?

Anyway, yeah, that picture is a few years old, and I look particularly young in it for some reason. I have more recent pictures, but none of them are very good -- all pretty bad quality, so I have to go with the old one whenever I'm posting something.

Here's one I took just now, with PhotoBooth, and the built in camera in my iMac. Not the greatest quality, but I don't look quite as young as in the other picture.

[Excuse the messy room. And no, this is not an advertisement for CheesIts.]

Thanks for the tip. It's fixed now.

Cool. Now you need to add "adventure" and "casual" to the tags, so people looking at Within a Deep Forest or Cave Story will get referred over to MM. Those two games would be very good company.

Geez, I never knew you were that young, Vern !!   ;)

Makes it even more impressing that you created MM.....

Oh Yikes, Vern - I apologize profusely if my comment about your youthful looks was in any way offensive. It was not at all meant to be.

Like aquaMat said - makes your achievements all that more impressive.

No no, nothing offensive. :-)

I'm probably older than I look? (I'm 28) People generally think I'm a bit younger than I am when they meet me in person. Although I was 22 when I started work on Midnight Mansion. (Same time I started college.)
