Title: Connecting 2nd monitor to G5
Post by aquaMat on 06.03.2007 at 22:04:05
Has anybody of you ever connected a 2nd monitor to an Apple PowerMac G5 (pre-Intel; Dual 2 GHz; inkl. ATI Radeon 9600).

I know that it's possible...what I do not know:

- Will there be a limit to screen resolution and / or color resolution after I connected a 2nd moniztor ?
(At the moment I'm running the main (and only) monitor with 1280 x960 (75 Hz) and 16 Mill. colors. Will I be able to keep that  resolution ?)

- I plan to use the 2nd monitor as "enlarged desktop".  But what will happen, when I switch on my computer and only 1 monitor.... will the Mac "automtaically realise" that I have not switched on the second monitor on this particular day, even if it's connected..... and will it 'adjust' the desktop accordingly ?

- What happens to MM, if I have 2 monitors running ??  Will it be full-screen, but only in the main monitor ?  And what is on the other screen then ?

I'll appreciate any advice, knowing that it's rather off-topic to our usual conversations in this forum.   :)

MM will run on your main screen, and your other screen will go black.

Don't know the answers to your other questions.

I have an idea! How about... like mario cart DS, one screen is the game, the other is the map!  ::) Just a thought.

That's actually a pretty great idea. But I don't think there's enough people playing dual screen MM to make it worth Vern's time.

It would probably get higher rating on sites! :P ::) (Vern needs the extra cash)  ;)

Hold down option at startup and press "leave monitor at is current" button.  :)

You should try to ask this question at an Apple/Mac forum  ;)

Yeah, yoiur probably right, brell......  although I thought I save myself the trouble to create an account at some Mac-forum just for that one question....

Can't you just press the "leave monitor at is current" at the startup of MM holding down option?  :-?

No, Wingy....MM isn't the problem here...!!  Like Vern said, when you start MM full screen, it automatically goes full-screen in 1 monitor, and the other goes black... so no problem with that.

I just had the feeling there might be a limitation on max. screen resolution when using 2 monitors (like the ATI Radeon 9600 might only manage 2 times a certain resolutin.....as opposed to 1 time millions of colors and a big screen res.

But I have it all set up now..... and it feels a little akward, but works okay!!
My main monitor (19") is still on 1280 x 960 and the 2nd monitor, a 17" is on a slightly lower setting.

Thanks !
