Title: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 07.03.2007 at 08:11:09
I still have a LC classic apple computer with Mac Os 7.3!   Haven't touched it for awhile due to no monitor... but I played lots of old games like...

Gorilla warfare - Love it!
Secret of Monkey Island, - Extremly funny puzzle game
Monkey Island 2: Le Chuck's revenge, - Just a sequel (Higher rating then the first)
Farm Patrol, - A shooting game of you in a jeep avoiding holes and evil things (Don't think its avalible at the site linked below, google it or go to www.versiontracker.com)
Sim City 2000, - Fun game where you build a city from lots of money
Castles: Siege and Conquest, - Recruit men and knights ect. to fight for you to defend your castles and attack (Tip: Don't attack the pope!)
Civiliztion, - (MUST PLAY) Fun game were you advance in technology, and conquer or make peace treaties with other nations.
Siege of Dark Wood, - Fun strategy game of you defending a fort from evil
Worms, - The older version of my favorite 3D game, Worms 3D
Legend Of Kyrandia, - Very funny puzzle game, like Monkey island
Glider Series  - Fun game where you fly around houses getting stars
Wolfenstein 3D, - Fun shooting game, not really 3D, because you look at a bad guy at one angle, and go to another, he looks the same
Spectre - Fun basic 3D shooting game. One of the first to ever come to mac
Sim Farm - Just another sim game

and many other classical games off of http://mac.the-underdogs.info/ - Download them all and try them!

8-) 8-)

You must try Civilization... I started in the prehistory age, build my militias and buildings, made irrigation farms and roads, and advaced my technology with different things like, mathmatics, physics, laws of gravity, explosives, chemistry, and then... space travel! You can either win by destroying bad guys or making a space ship by getting all the tecnolgys and flying to alpha Centcuri...? How do you spell it? Well anyways... its a fun game, beat it lots of times. It continues with the game Alpha Centcuri (Spelling?) It also continues with Civ. 2, 3 and 4. Also, there's a game similar to it that you can download at Macintosh Garden. (http://mac.the-underdogs.info/) It's called colonization. You go over from either netherlands, england, spain or france to seek out the new land in the 1500s.

About civiliztion... Must have 256 colors on and classic to play Civilization or Colonization. You can switch to millions of colors during gameplay, but the number of population on the citys will go all white instead of black. I photoshopped this picture to make the town populations black. As you can see, I'm the roman empire, took over the french's town, (Their only town, paris) and I was just researching gunpowder when I saved and took this picture. Beware of barbarians, they're red. They rarely do any damage, unless you have no armys in your town and take it over. They're easy to kill with your armys, (bigger change) because they have no town with a barracks where they got trained. Try to get one at the town where you build your units.  :) Don't forget, to build new towns you need the setler unit. You start out with one, sometimes two. And if you find "huts" in the forests go into them with your unit. You either find scrolls of wisdom that gives you tecnology, men to fight with you, people who want to start a town, or a horde of barbarins who kill you.  :P Listen to your advisors in your town.

Oh yeah, hurray to Icelanders who gave us monkey island!

Thanks for the spelling! Did you try Civiliztion yet?  ::)

Civilisation 2 was, surprisingly enough, a big progress as compared to civ. 1. Many loose ends got tidied up, I'd say  (like you don't *have* to build stuff when you have everything you want already  ::), but not only - though I'd be damned if I remember what it was which was so impressive!). And the French translation in civ. 1 looked as if it was made by the Google Language Tool thingie :o

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 07.03.2007 at 23:45:13
*sigh* I'm talking about Civ. 1. So what if civ 2 is cool, you have to buy it now! I'm talking about the free classical games! (One or two of these might be stilll shareware, like Farm Patrol)

Tried it but never finished it.  It is actually possible to get it as an X11 application via Fink.

There goes the last reason which makes me sometimes think that PC's have some use  ;)

But the sound won't play. Is it normal?

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 08.03.2007 at 20:47:56
Er... no... that's not normal... and it's not for PC, as far as I know. Why don't you just like... go to a friend who has classic, copy their OS 9 folder onto a CD, and then put it on your computer by copying it into /System/Libary/. Then go play Monkey Island OS 9 version by downloading it off http://mac.the-underdogs.info/
8-)
I did it with my dad's G5 that came with the classic folder.

Then, the sound would work. There's only music and sound effects, no speech. Did you check the menu to make sure Music and Sound were checked off?

Title: Re: Great classical games

Please note that the Classic environment does not work on intel machines.

*sigh* How pitiful.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Toybox on 08.03.2007 at 22:33:00
I meant Monkey Island, which I used to see as the only reason why anybody would want a PC (then again, I'm quite biased). And I have classic on my laptop! I even use it for work, sometimes  ::) I'll get the OS9 version then, thanks!

(I'll check the menu as well, just in case.)

Can't believe someone still has a running LC! Mine literally fried itself out.  :'(

Love "Monkey Island".

Also "Glider" - which last time I looked was free and playable in OSX.

For shareware, I adore the games from Spiderweb Software. I've played them all ever since they hit my computer. ;)
http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/

Can't remember what other games I played. There was a cool space shooting thing in my screen saver thing from Berkeley software. I taught my boss to play that one.  ;D

Agree with you on the Spiderweb games.

I have ScummVM. The game FAQ said to get it. But it ScummVM wouldn't let me load the game! Indy and the lost crusade game, works fine. It opens a Scumm thing when it starts. Didn't do that for the Atlatis one. So I pressed ALT+Enter to go to find, and pressed show to the Scumm thing for the working game in finder. It was in the package contents, so I used that info to go to the next game, it was similar. So I went to the scumm in the Atlantis one, opened it, it opened termial app. from the Untilites folder. It said libSDL-1.2.0.dylib was missing. Got it from my brother on his intel over the internet. It's still downloading, so there's a 50% chance I'll get it to work.

After along time of working, I got it to work! If anyone els is having this problem, take this .zip file from my server and put the folder unzipped in your hard drive folder. It then should work.

Sorry Wingy!
Forgot to say that Fate of Atlantis from Sveinborgs site doesn't work. I bought fate of Atlantis on ebay and that work with scumm.1

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 09.03.2007 at 22:34:33
It works just fine when you put this folder that you download into your hard disk folder.  :) You didn't have to buy it!  ::)

Title: Re: Great classical games

I have tried that and it never worked. Got fed up after 2 years and invested a few dollars in the game.

Well, I tried Monkey Island on in Intel iMac from the games at:

http://www.sveinbjorn.org/classic_adventure_games

But I get no music, and very little sound. (I think a door opening/closing was the only sound I got, period.) Is that normal?

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by rose on 10.03.2007 at 15:33:33
Vern, I don't have any sound at all when playing Monkey Island. Can't remember if I had it earlier. I run a G4 PowerPC (also having macos 9.2 for classical games)

Wingy, I still can't start Fate of A. It doesn't matter where I put it.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 10.03.2007 at 20:20:31
Put it in your startup disk! Mine's named Macintosh HD. It's right on the desktop!
Took me and my bro awhile to figure out. But I did it with his help!

Oh yeah, you can see I'm playing Indiana Jones and the fate of atlantis in the background... already beat the other one!  8-)

Are we talking about the version from Sveinbjorn?? It just doesn't start when I click on it. The others I have in a folder on another partion and they work fine.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 10.03.2007 at 23:58:09
I think you have to install SDL too. There's a link in small writing at the bottom of the page where I got the game. Yes, I'm talking about the one I downloaded from the site you told us.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by rose on 11.03.2007 at 00:09:25
It is really annoying that I can't make it work. I have SDL installed. :'(
Why does it work on one machine and not on another?? Well, I have my bought version and it works with scumm.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 11.03.2007 at 01:49:49
Show the package contents of the game. Go to: Resources/Scumm/scumm/. Termial should open. Take a screenshot of what the code looks like and post the screenshot here. I'll see what I can do...  8-)

Hi!
I don't think we should pursue this. I can't open the code in the way you propose but I've found something wrong. Look at the snapshot. It sais Monkey Island instead of indiana jones and the fate of atlantis!

Go into this file (Double-Click it) and it should open Termial. (The one in red)  :P Then take a screenshot of its code and show me. You could be missing more peices then you think, I only lost one. If you want to give up, tell me.

Hi!
It would be lovely to make it work but as I only can see the files through the app Resorcerer I can't open them in Terminal. Here is how the app looks in the Finder. I can't see the scumm folder and it files in Finder.

Hi,  I finally found out how to do as you said. Easy when you know! I have copied the text/code.

It can't find libSDL!? I have SDL but nothing named libSDL.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 12.03.2007 at 00:01:06
Download my thing from the link to get it. It's in what folder it's suppose to be in, sw folder then the lib folder. Put the sw folder in the same folder that your System Folder is in. Mine's my main startup disk, named Macintosh HD. That's how I did it.

http://server1.yellowdns.com/~staron/antsarts/sw.zip

Mine was very simmilar to your error message!

I can see that your game is in the same folder as your system folder. Put this folder that you will download in the same folder as the game. Oh yeah, also put a copy of the libSDL in contents of the game in the MacOS folder. That's what I had... not sure if that's required, but try it.  ;)

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by rose on 12.03.2007 at 01:34:16
Wow, Wingy! Where did you get the folders and files from? They have never existed on my puter, at least I have never thrown any like that in the bin.

Off to try it out!

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 12.03.2007 at 01:58:13
You mean... you never tried it????? BTW: I got the file from my super-geek brother who justed started Univercity. He's got a intel iMac. Only thing good about it is... you can play my favorite Windows game on it, Fable!  :P I don't know where he got it, but he sent it to me over Msn. I think he got it from his system folder.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by rose on 12.03.2007 at 02:17:11
It works fine. It has tobe in the system folder. Just there is enough.

I moved from PowerPC 7600 to G4 with Panther. Quite a leap. The sw folder must have existed on earlier Macos versions then mine.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 12.03.2007 at 03:24:11
So now we can end this conversation of making it working? I had a PPC 7600, too! Did yours have video input and output in the back? I played PlayStation with mine! Then I bought a iBook G4 with Pather! Isn't that something we had the same things?  :D

Sorry to bump into the conversation, but it still doesn't work for me (Fate of Atlantis I mean). I tried to move the sw folder around, but nothing happened  :-/

Er, am I supposed to run it under Classic maybe?

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 12.03.2007 at 07:00:39
No classic. Just put the sw folder in the same folder as your System folder. Also, go into contents and put a copy of the lipSDL file from the sw folder into the MacOS folder. (In the contents of Indy Atlantis)

Title: Re: Great classical games

:o Wow! I had no idea that applications had contents  [smiley=laugh.gif]

It works now! Seems like magic to me! Thanks a million Wingy! [smiley=dankk2.gif] [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]! I'll make a special room for you in my next mansion (in all likelihood a Catacombs section).

Wingy, I never understood this about the Macos folder. I haven't put anything in any macos folder. It works just having one in Tian (Macintosh HD).
Which Macos folder is it? I have zillions.

Title: Re: Great classical games
Post by Wingy on 12.03.2007 at 20:44:48
It was the MacOS folder in the contents of the game beside the resources folder. Since you told me it didn't work before you tried what I did, I told you to do this because I put a copy in there without the sw folder and it didn't work. Then I made a copy with the sw folder and put it into the Macintosh HD folder with my System folder.  ;)
