Title: Eavesdropping
Post by ryos on 27.03.2007 at 01:46:08
Remember how I said I was working on my first mansion, and that it was slow going? Well...I got faster, and it's done!  8-)

I think it's pretty much a law of the universe that my first attempt at anything has to suck. So, rather than put a lot of time and effort into a real mansion, I figured I'd make a silly game that should still be fun. This has helped me learn how the editor works and the mechanics of level building without having to worry too much about the design of the rooms and mansion.

I think the product is pretty fun. It's called Eavesdropping, not because you're listening in on a private conversation, but because you literally must drop from the eaves of a very tall tower. On the way down are lots of prizes, if you're quick enough to retrieve them! Can you get a high score?

(Yes, this mansion is directly inspired by Wingy's Jack Fall.)

I had originally intended this for the free uploading forum, but I think I've built it up enough to merit a spot on the lists. So, that means I need a couple people to test it before I send it off to the admins. Any takers?

Thanks!

Looking forward to yur mansion, Ryos, but I haven't got the time to test it for you.  But since you are now becoming a builder, I hereby invite you to have a cabin on my ship in The Pirate Invasion  :)

Send me an e-mail if you are interested.

Looks like everyone's busy (so'm I ;)), so I've decided to go ahead and just submit it. I've tested it pretty thoroughly myself.

Here's a teaser shot:

Thanks! And go right on ahead...after all, I stole the idea from Wingy!  [smiley=dankk2.gif] Wingy!

P.S. What was your high score?

Heh. Jack fall was a free product. Let's just say, it wasn't affical, so you don't get in trouble for using it's ideas. It was just a mansion maybe to inspire you. I had the idea in my head for quite awhile, but never did it! So then I did it in my spare time. :P Good thing I didn't do it for nothing! Didn't play it yet. I head I'll be in for a treat!

Hi!
Tird time I got in 6 minutes and 3 seconds, 85625 money and 100% secrets. Jack has to try to jump again and see if he can GET more.

@Wingy: The name Eavesdropping is a silly play on words. Such things are never quite as funny when explained (as if it were ever funny to begin with), so I'll let you think on it some more. (Looking up "eaves" might help. :P)

@Everyone else: it should be clear by now that I went a little overboard with the gold on one of the secrets. This may or may not be a bad thing considering your point of view.  :-/

Here's my high score. It's beatable, but only just. Who will beat it?

Ryos,
I wonder is it really possible to get 100% secrets with one jump (=one playthrough) ??

What with there being more than one exit, several starting places for the jump etc. ?!

PS: Judging by the pic above it is possible to achieve 100%... but how ?   It can't be possible to reach all money / all secrets with one jump ???   :-/ :-/

From "Level Builder - More Tips":

Quote:
Be careful if your mansion has multiple one paths to the exit. For instance, Nightmare Mansion has a left/right branch. Let's say the left branch has 15 secrets. You'd want to put 15 secrets in the right branch too, and then enter "15" as the total number of secrets in the mansion. That way, regardless of which branch the player takes, they are still able to get a 100% secrets found rating by finding all of the secrets in the branch they took.

Hmm...well, Eavesdropping isn't quite like this. Erm, yellow spoilers: The mansion has five secrets: one in the first branch, and four in the secret branch. I entered the secret count as four so it would be possible to get 100% secrets if you take the secret branch, but not if you don't.

This makes sense to me; because I consider the left branch a secret, it seems only reasonable to only be able to get 100% secrets if you take the left branch.

But, I'm new at this, and welcome feedback. Is this wrong, and if so, how/why?

To me, that sounds fine. People will tell you that they want to be able to get ALL the secrets in a mansion on one playthrough, but I've never subscribed to that philosophy. I think it's fine to split up the paths, as long as you give the player some hint that there was a path untaken, so he/she can go back and look for it next time.

With a mansion like this, which is so short and encourages players to try different things, it's especially reasonable to split secrets up along different paths, and if you're not thinking of one path being "better" than another path, then it should be possible to get 100% either way. So I think you did it right.

In an experimental mansion like this nice and funny Eavesdropping I have no problem at all with different paths leading to different secrets and exits, as long as the total amount of secrets on all chosen paths is equal.
