Title: Wingy's computer broken!
Post by Wingy on 04.04.2007 at 07:57:07
This is totally NO FAIR!! I was on my computer, and then, it crashed. Then I started it up again, and it wouldn't go! After talking to my geekish brother on MSN on my brother's computer. He told me to try to repair my computer by holding down Command + S while starting up. I got to a terminal screen, typed FSCK -F (The code for repair computer) and it said error, ect. Then I started up my computer with OS 10.4 upgrade DVD! I tried restoring my computer with my dad's 500 GB hard drive but it didn't work!! After 12 hours of trying everything possible, I gave up. I HAD to re inisilize my Hard Drive. (Meaning everything on it GONE.) That means Ted gone, Castle Basano, my other mansions, some other games, and lots of Apps, and especially, my MM serial number!!! Doesn't mean I'm not going into the contest though, I'll rebuild. With a new Castle Basano! (If I can get my hands on my serial number, I think its kicking around in my e-mail, or not!)

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Could you not have booted it in target disk mode and saved your data that way?

That really sucks, man. Really! That reminds me--I'm overdue for a backup...

YEOOOWWWWWWWW.

been there, done that. That's why I have a noisy helical scan tape backup hooked to my home server. If it's important a folder action copies it over and it gets backed up every night. Tough break but like ryos said, how come you didn't start up from the DVD/CD? You might have been able to save something. When you had it started with the 10.4 disk. I think you can also run disk utilities from it too.

Guess what I found! A backup of Ted only a week old!!! :) I did use utilitys from 10.4 DVD and it wouldn't do anything. I did everything, I had no choice other then waiting afew weeks for it to get repaired! But I thought, and I relized by that time I could have rebuilt.

Poor Wingy....
But that was the first thing on my mind, when I read your initial post.... doesn't he do back-ups ???

So obviously you found one....good news !!  ;) :)

After I had one terrible crash mid-work on my studio computer (many years ago) with several hundred audio-files lost (= several days of recording & editing work), which happened at a point in time, where I had happened to have made no back-up for a couple of days (which even then was rarely the case)....well, after that incident I have established a routine of backing-up on a very regular basis, including incremental savings of the project and double back-ups of the audio-files.

It's a dirty job....but you should go the extra mile...it's well worth it (as you can see in this case) !!

Hmmm... I can't start my computer up with any CD other then the 10.4 DVD! Is it because my disk is mounted according to Disk Utility on 10.4 DVD? I can't unmount it! The botton wont do anything!  :o

You know, I'm a young dude and as far as I know, I'm not that good at restoring broken hard drives! So what if I replaced a hard drive before from opening up my computer, unscrewing, ect... but this is different... why won't my computer start up with a 10.1 CD? Why does it only start up with the 10.4 DVD???  :-/  :'( Help!

Wingy, is it an Intel Mac? Maybe that has something to do with not being able to start up with anything but 10.4?
:-/

Post by ryos on 07.04.2007 at 08:20:33
Yeah, what kind of Mac is it? There aren't many left that can boot 10.1. Mine was made in 2003 and boots at minimum 10.3!

It's an ibook g4 with 933MHz and 512 Ram. It started with 10.2, I believe. :o But I'm getting 10.4 install disks, so my mac will be back soon.  :)

Suddenly, my harddrive started making a clicking sound... and that isn't very good! (and for anyone who doesn't know what that means, it means that my harddrive is toast.)

So now I'm very sad... but I did back-up my Ted and Castle basano, but I lost lots of files. So now...
I have like $1,200 CAN and I'm going to buy a new computer! I'm going to wait until leopard (Mac OS 10.5) so I save money. I'm looking at a nice refurbished macbook, 2GHz Duo 2 Intel core, 1GB Memory, oh yeah. And Im thinking of getting a superdrive, not just a combo!

And I did hear some rumours that there's a new macbook coming out at the end of October... and rumors that Leopard is coming out at the end of October, but there's no way of telling. ::)

If this rumor is true, Leopard will hit sometime in October (IOW, right on schedule). I'll be right there with you, Wingy, buying a new MacBook Pro. My computer still works fine, but, hey, it's four years old and starting to feel really slow, so what the heck, right?  8-)

LEOPARD COMING OUT OCTOBER 26th!!! (www.apple.com)

They got a big timer for Leopard's release! Can't wait. I'm going to get Macbook (not macbook pro, ryos!) on the 27-29th, and I'm not going for that upgrade deal if you buy it before it comes out, because the next time my dad is going to the USA for any reason, isn't until the beginning November. Since the currency of Canadian money is higher then USA (1 USD = 1.02 CAD) our US friend will buy it for us... and Dad will go pick it up from him!

And mikee... what if you computer crashes a lot and deletes *everything?* Wouldn't you want a new computer?

P.S> if you look at the canadian timer for leopard at www.apple.ca, and the US one at www.apple.com, there's a 2-3 hour difference! Strange!

OHHhh yeah... there's like a 3-4 hr differance from L.A. California to Toronto... (L.A. is the place I think the main apple store is)

Anyways... with leopard coming out and I'm getting a new computer, life is being a bit nicer to me nowadays... too bad my old computer died.

Did anyone take a look at the guided tour of Leopard at www.apple.com? There's a link to it on the big leopard countdown board.

All-in-all, my favorite new features gotta be the new scroll-from-dock folders, quicklook, that iChat thing that lets you share desktops and that the mail application will let me log in with my hotmail address! The most interesting feature yet, thought, is timemachine. Like really, buy a $180 120GB-500GB external harddrive to backup EVERY single file and never delete it off the external harddrive? I'd just go to a computer store and buy a 4GB portable USB thing and back-up my key files every night.

Also, with my new computer it seems that it will come with iLife '08! Then I can make a website with my movies, books and stuff to replace my old antsarts.surf.to website! Yay! Lolz, haven't touched that site sinch January, when all my computer troubles began.

Really, woo hoo for you. There is nothing better than getting a new computer - AND with Leopard - AND with iLife 08 which is so much better than the last one - AND with a much better (I would guess) game chip. You will be so happy - and only happier - if you had a lot of Apple stock!!!!! You have to love our company.

I'm most excited about the foundational improvements - i.e., the stuff that's not really demoable in a guided tour video (which I did watch). Core animation, for example, is going to make for some interesting UI advancements.

I'm also interested in Spaces - I may find they make me more productive; we'll see!

Friday's the day I place my order at the Apple Online Store (I want an upgraded HD, so I have to wait for them to ship the thing from China. :(). I'm so excited! Let's jump for joy together!  [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Ooh Wingy.....
have you really got your new computer already with OS 10.5 installed (offocially released today!) ??

If so, I need to know:
Do you have any problems running software that was made for MacOSs earlier than 10.5 ?

(That's why I'm hesitating to update to 10.5 so early.... as I'm using my Mac professionally too (it's my studio computer) I fear that some of my music software (or other important software) that were made for - say - 10.2. etc. could have problems running on 10.5.)

iMac, eh? 17", from the looks of it. Did you get a refurb, or is that your Dad's? ;)

Title: Re: Wingy's computer broken!
Post by Wingy on 27.10.2007 at 05:45:50
Me dad's. And the e-mail in the dock is my dads! He's a really busy guy.

This is an upgrade, just adding more software, Aquamat! All my 10.4 apps work better then ever!

And how we got leopard earlier then the public did, (screenshot took at 38 Mins before release) my brother joe is a programmer and does code. Apple sent him leopard early to him for all developers. I imagine Vern got it too, but I dunno.

But now LEOPARD IS OFFICIALLY OUT!!!

There's at least 1 user in that forum who enquired about similar professional music / studio software as I am using. (Although as of now, nobody could answer him yet....).

hey wingy, what for a computer you have to build on any mansions?

Title: Re: Wingy's computer broken!
Post by Wingy on 01.11.2007 at 02:30:01
Uhh.. until I get my next computer, (should arrive Nov. 9-11th) I won't be building...

Now, back to subject... my old computer was indeed broken UNTIL - DUH DUH DUH DA>... (lolz)- I opened it up and replaced the harddrive and did a hardware check and moved afew things that where out of place inside. Thats what I did. Put it back together, (with some screws leftover after ::)) it worked! But it still crashes a lot... Did a hardware test with that oh so trusty hardware test CD, NOTHING WRONG WITH MY LOGIC BOARD!

I'm guessing it's freezing a lot because - My first power cable burnt out, so I got another one (That was NOT made my apple) it didn't work. The power was unstable. There was a blue light on it representing it was on, but it was flashing! (Like started to fade, then blinked back up to full blue-ness, then started to fade, and so on.)

Now I'm guessing it's crashing a lot because the power was not stable, so I'm going to buy a new power cable off e-bay. Then I'm going to sell the computer for... $300-$400 AFTER I get a airport card and new battery for it. (I'll get a airport card because the ethernet port is in a questionable state, doesn't always work)

Anyways... thats my up-to-date story of my computer.

*But soon I'll get a new Macbook 2.16GHz White Intel Duo 2 Core Super Drive 64 VRAM 1GB Memory and so on* :P :P

aha and wingy what for a computer you have NOW?!? to build on mansions?

Title: Re: Wingy's computer broken!
Post by Wingy on 02.11.2007 at 03:04:40
NOW, I have nothing, still. Until I get my computer on Nov. 9th, I will have no computer to make mansions on!

Me and my dad just finished ordering my Refurbed MacBook from www.apple.com (not .ca!) last night. Let me tell you again, since the USD is lower than Canada's dollar, it would be cheaper to buy it in the US and send it to a friend in the US, drive down there and get it, then bring it back here. Save $400 about.

Anyways...
I bought the Macbook that had...

~~~Macbook~~~
2.16 GHz Intel Duo 2 Core White
Super Drive (DVD burner, not just reader!)
1 GB Memory/Ram
64 MBs VRAM
120 GB Harddrive
Built in iSight
iLife '08 (GarageBand woot!)
And best of all: MAC OS 10.5 LEOPARD
And there's much, much more extra stuff.
Costed $1099. About $950 CAD.
I feel lucky.
P.S. I changed my name 'cuz I felt like it. :P ::)
Now, the wait sets in. It can be unbearable.
As for me, my MacBook Pro arrived yesterday. I've had a lot of headaches related to compiling and installing all the server software that lets me test my web pages without having to upload them first. Since none of the "easy methods" of installing this stuff have been updated for Leopard, I had to figure it out all on my own. Nuts!
But, on the plus side, this computer is insane. It's super freaking insane. I can't believe how much smoother everything is, just simple things like scrolling, opening and closing windows, switching tabs (in NetNewsWire and TextMate especially) are just instantaneous on this beast. Oh, and all that compiling went really really fast (stuff that took hours to compile on my old machine compiled in minutes on this one).
You're going to love yours when it comes. :)
Hey Ryos, did you get a refurbed Mac? My older brother's friend got a Macbook for his girlfriend, and it turned out that it absolutly wouldn't work! He spent 6 hours on the phone, and they sent him a brand new macbook with max ram and max harddrive, etc.
Tell me what the specs on your macbook pro is, Im curious how fast you're talking about!
Hey Anthony D and Chris...........AKA    Wingy and Mikee,
Why would you guys want to change your names on the boards?  Now no-one knows your mansions were made by you?  (New players, that is?) :-?
Just curious over here in BC, Canada.
I bought mine new. I saved up for months because I wanted the latest thing. Refurbs are nice and a good deal, and you can occasionally get the latest model as a refurb, but I decided that, rather than scour the refurb page for deals, I would just wait a bit longer and save up the price difference.
I kept my last computer for four years. I hope for this one to last me six. We'll see. :p
I got the base 15" MBP (the cheapest model) and boosted the HDD to 160GB. Specs here. The main differences between the MBP and MB are:
  • Better screen
  • WAY better video card
  • Newer Santa Rosa chipset w/faster memory bus (at the time I bought mine this was the case; yesterday, the MacBook was bumped to use the Santa Rosa chipset).
  • Better keyboard
There are a few other niceties as well that I don't really care about. Those four advantages are the main reason I spent the extra $400 (over the MB configuration that I would have bought had I gone that route).
It's not a problem to know the mansions that I and wingy have created. This name "Mikee" I hade see at an internet-game, and then was the name my. But know is the name a little stupid for me. I have the name just in a another internet-game now and nowhere more....
It's not really hard to find my Mansion or Sandy? I make a test:
How many Mansions i have created Sandy? Or better the names of that... You can say?  ::) ;)
