Title: The Great "What-happens-with-updates-POLL"
Post by aquaMat on 23.12.2007 at 18:49:30
I thought I create a poll to find out how users react to new updates of older mansions.

Please participate and vote what applies most to your behaviour...!

Thanks,

aquaMat

PS: Even guest users are invited to vote !!

Well. Very interesting that you started this poll, only one day after we, admins, changed the way of downloading.

We had nothing against guests downloading custom mansions. And also nothing against members using the shortcut to the CMs Sub-Forum to download new mansions.

But there was a major BUT. We realized with too much delay that more and more MMF-members used the "show me the 10 (or 30 ;)) latest posts" and as soon as they saw something like "c6kf9y876..." they knew there was a new mansion. But all work of designers and administrators about UPDATES got far too often lost. The best way to know ALL news about the custom mansions, new ones AND updates, is by going to the list sorted by date. So no one has to miss any, sometimes very important, update any more!

And concerning our guests, the upgrade of a member from Newbie to Lost One is since yabb 2.2 a matter of "seconds". So they really don't need to hesitate to ask to be upgraded to be able do downloads the CMs.

Thx for your comprehension!

My answer on the poll is that, if I didn't upload the mansion myself, I always download all updates and new mansions at once, but not always play them immediately, due to a lack of time. But sooner or later I visit them all. Be sure of that! :)

Mmmh... Is it really a good think to make registration compulsory to download custom mansions? This is the sort of things which might put me off getting the CM at all.

Just half an hour ago I didn't post something in a forum about some piece of software which wouldn't get launched, just because I didn't want to register. (Can't keep track of all places I'm registered to, really).

Oh, and with the 10 (or 30 - I knew I should have picked a more obscure number, such as, um, 42) last posts we are still informed about updates. (Yes yes, I'm the guy who was 8 months late with Volcanis - but that was this period of time I was away for long and I might have missed updates.)

(By the way, just a very minor point - why was the Mansion Name in The Great Escape and, maybe, The Dragon's Trap, made to coincide with the file name? Was it so confusing? Not that there's anything wrong with it.)

As for my vote: I download them at once (provided I notice the update  ::)) but don't necessarily play them straight away. Then it depends on the nature of the change (changing the secrets count is less of an incentive than, say, rearranging a section).

I am trying several things out right now. And in the end ... maybe it will be back as before ... :-/ ::) :-[

EDITED: as before! :)

That has a very important reason, because it is the only way to find out what version of a mansion you have. See:

Ah, but the version number could be appended to a different mansion name.

:-/ Mmmm. Yes. But wouldn't that be too confusing. E.g. "Pieres aux Loups 1.1" ? :-?

I know it is not the case. Now. But suppose that all 82 CMs have 2 names: a filename and a mapname.

And maybe there are players who play so often, that in the middle of a mansion they suddenly don't know any more what mansion they are playing. Pressing "M" now gives an immediate answer.

And I am afraid there is not enough space for adding a subtitle. :(

No problem at all. I don't mind players not being confused by the names  [smiley=evil.gif]

Back to topic:

I find it very reassuring that - until now - the majority of the voters seems to react to new updates by immediately downloading them and replaying the resp. mansion.

For the designers this is a proof how valuable it is to keep their mansions updated....
