Title: Christmas Catastrophe- Download it today!
Post by sam skelton on 25.12.2007 at 20:57:13
Here's a somewhat small mansion I made. It has a few puzzles and some interesting sights, a good amount of secrets, custom backgrounds, and lots of LAVA!  all compiled in one mansion of 23 rooms, it should be packed full of excitement!
toybox- I fixed the problems

Nice little mansion! And I love the backgrounds :)

A few issues should be taken care of though (I'll send you a PM)

Sam - I like your little mansion, but when I tried to put the backgrounds in the Screens folder, I realized that I already have backgrounds numbers 9, 10, 11.

I don't want to lose the other ones, so now what?

Make a new number of the pictures (backgrounds) and then in the mansion too!  ::) :)

Well, all you need to do is change the numbers at the end to 12, 13, and 14. Sorry about that, wasn't thinking. Pretty much what Mikee said. (I think...)

SAM and everybody playing Sam's Xmas mansion:

All you have to do is:
Rename the background screens folder "Christmas Catastrophe Data" and put it right next to the mansion (within the "Custom Mansions" folder) and no further swopping or other caretaking of these background-files is necessary !!

Sam, maybe you could modify your download (folder) accordingly ?!

Oops.... I forgot to say:

Thanks, Sam, for that nice Xmas present... I really liked that mansion !!

I ended with just 92 % secrets, though.....   :'(   :o

aquaMat: Do you mean that you can leave the screens in the Christmas Catastrophe Data folder, without moving them into the "Game Data" folder and that will work?

Yes. Please have a look at the latest replies at the topic about the end of files-swopping.

Or just re-download IR or DoD to see how neatly it works.

To have no misunderstandings: all honour in this issue is for Vern. And I am  :-[ only 5 months too late :-[ to get knowledge of this feature. >:(

I also tested the following - it is possible to play mansions which are located in Subfolders of the CM Folder. This feature can be nice for classification purpose - by Designer, by Difficulty, by Beaten / Not Beaten Yet, etc. However, it is not possible to resume suspended or saved games.

One really discovers new features every day! (Even when these new features are old - says the guy who updated Volcanis about 8 months late)

And more relevant to the subject of the thread: finished the mansion too, with 80% secrets only  :-[

I'm in the third room of Christmas Catastrophe, 16101, and already stuck.  Can one really jump across the last chasm to the right or do I need to do some more thinking and exploring?   :o

That's the room with the presents, isn't it?

You can jump then. It's a tough one, the ones afterwards are easier.

That spot cost me a zillion lives, too ..... until I tried a long forgotten feature (which I hardly ever use) to.... jump better.....!

acquaMat, you gave me a good clue.  I thought back to the early days of the original mansions and got across.  Thanks! :)

Sorry, I was trying to make an easier mansion- I'm still learning from the Experts. Although, it was nice to get back to building mansions. My next one will probably be when the expansion comes out, because I take my time building mansions.

I, too, am having Mega Difficulty with that jump, I can't tell you how many of my Jacks got drowned in Lava!  I managed to make it across three times with a running jump, but it was never a guaranteed thing! :-?

If any one could offer any help/hints, I would really appreciate it. :D

The three times I did make it through, I enjoyed what I saw in the mansion, until all my lives were lost, and now I am dreading having to try that jump again !!! :( :-[ :o

Thanks,

My tip is if you like me usually use  jump key with key for walking instead use the 7 or 9 key when distant is important.

Stand on the heels (in the air :P) and press 9 and you/Jack will land on the toes on the other side.

THANKS,  ROSE !!!   :D

Excellent tip, I had no idea of the # 7 and 9 key for jumping, now my Jack is landing on his toes and lovin it!   ;)

Wow, that was a nice mansion. It deserves to be a mansion to be put in the folder of mansions. Not just a free up-downloading mansion!

That was what I was referring to above, when I spoke of a "long forgotten feature (that I hardly ever use)"... !!  ;)

I hardly ever come across a situation where it's needed to use 7 or 9, instead of the normal "walk plus jump" feature.
In fact, I didn't even know that the use of  9 results in a "longer jump" than jumping the "normal way", until I tried it in this mansion.

Aquamat, I have used the keys 7 or 9 in some of your mansions too when testing them for you. My fingers or is it the keys on the keyboard aren't perfectly synchronised.  ;D

I never knew about the 7 and 9 key trick. Can't wait to try it out.
Thanks for the tip!

Hi all

Because I have a MacBook Pro and therefore no numeric key pad, I simply changed the controls (options screen) to suit myself - currently I am using the fullstop and comma keys to peform the long jumps.  This can be a bit clumsy, but it works - the amount of times I need to do this is very few luckily... :)

Okay, fixed the Super- hard jump so it's easier. Because I can't edit my first post, I will put the easier version here:

Oh, I use the same keys  :) (Because of the little > and < symbols which indicate the jumping direction.) I don't find them so clumsy really, I use them very often for precision jumps.

I also change whatever original keys were for Jump and Action for Tab and Q. It was probably deemed more convenient to have them close to each other and completely in Left Hand's domain, while Right Hand was doing all the navigation ::)
