Title: Level Designer Problem
Post by Leon on 19.03.2010 at 03:11:30
Hi,

I'm not sure if the Level Designer is the source of the problem that I'm having but it only happens when it's open. Basically, I was in my IT lesson building a new lesson (I finished my project so I couldn't really do anything else) but every once in a while my MacBook would just restart itself. It happened about 5 or 6 times in under 2 hours. I'm thinking this could maybe be caused be iTunes being open while listening to songs at the same time as the Mansion builder. I've got a MacBook running on Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard. It's also Intel Core Duo. Please could someone help me?

Thanks
Leon

That's weird. Did you just upgrade to Snow Leopard? Maybe Software Update is set to download updates and restart automatically to install them? I don't know, I'm just taking a wild guess.

No, I updated to Snow Leopard about half a year a go.

That's happened to me, so it seems it only occurs on Macbooks. I've run *only* the Builder and had it crash. I've found that if your computer is rather hot, chances it will crash will increase. The most frequent crash is in the "Mansion Info" screen, when the builder calculates the # of money, secrets and rooms, all at once. I'm guessing it's overwhelming the computer in a way, and it takes a bit to think it through -- and maybe then the computer thinks it has crashed. The new Snow Leopard system is designed to just restart your finder automatically if a crash occurs, most of the time. Maybe that's what happened.

That's my hypothesis.

The solution? Cooling pad? Macbook Pros get *very* hot when audio is running, and when the screen is at max brightness, and having a flash player running in a web browser, etc. I'm not sure though. Heat may not be the issue. It could be software. (Snow Leopard probably, but maybe the builder itself)

Huh. Well, the software is showing its age I guess. There is nothing wrong with the code as far as I can tell, but, Rosetta doesn't always run older software better.

The ultimate solution here is, after I release Midnight Mansion 2, I'll port it to a new platform that will allow:

- iPhone version
- Windows version
- Universal Binary Mac version

The sticky point here is that the editor still wont' be ported... that'll be a rather big project that I'll start after doing all of the above. But once I do finally port it, it should run without weird problems like this, and I'll have a fully modern platform upon which I can build future versions of the game!
