Title: Signs causing crashes
Post by mick on 04.12.2011 at 18:01:41
Signs cause a for-real crash.

The screenshot is just for emphasis. In the beginning of the mansion, every sign causes a crash/application unexpectedly quit.  Later in the mansion, the signs don't cause crashes.  Go figure. ;)

Also, Leon, some of the signs in your mansions with a lot of text are cut off; they seem to need scrolling and that's not happening.

Mick, are you sure you are in House of Wonders by Freddy?  If so, where is the room you are in?  Why are you addressing Leon, who did not make HoW?

The most important question is, though:  Where did you find signs in HoW?  I don't recall any sign in that mansion.

8-)

This looks like Palais Pompomrouge(sp?), is that right? If so, which version, so we can move this topic.

But Leon did not make PP, right?  Besides, there should not be any sign problems in PP.

Checked both PP and Temple of the Gorgons by Leon (the only CM by Leon).  Signs work fine in both mansions but there is a problem with a missing music file in TotG HD (a warning comes up but the game does not crash).

So it would be very nice to know which custom mansion Mick is referring to.

I just checked, and it was leo (not Leon) that made both Palais Pompomrouge mansions, plus Jacques' Revenge parts I and II. Maybe it's one of the Jacques?

Nope.  All signs in Leo's mansions seem to be OK.

This Topic was moved here from House of Wonders by brell.

How did you check them, Brell? There was something strange we were seeing with certain characters resulting in problems. I thought it had been fixed, but maybe something was missed. It wasn't like some of the other sign issues where it was easy to spot, unless you were playing it with the new game. I think it had to do with line ending characters (carriage return/line feed).

I know Vern had a fix for it but he's had some really frustrating issues getting patches out through the App store. The fix may not have made it out.

It's been a while but I thought I'd written a script to detect the problem - and maybe even fix it. Just to reiterate, was the problem found in HoW, mick, or a different mansion?

OK.  This seems to be Jacques' Revenge part I.  Leo uses a lot of text in some sign and at least in the HD the text sometimes is cut off as Mick puts it at the bottom of the sign.

Also, Leo seems to have used the space bar (or perhaps tab) to center the text on some signs or at least to move it horizontally on the sign away from the left border of the sign.  This causes the HD to crash.

Either Leo must fix this or Vern must change the HD so it can read signs like this.

There are lots and lots of signs in Leo's mansions and I am not going to spend my time to checked them ll whether they need to be adjusted or not.  We must wait for Leo to do so (whenever he reads this post).

The question to the admins is:  Shall we remove this mansion from the HD list (and perhaps all of Leo's mansions) until it is fixed?

Here's what I'd suggest initially. Let me see if a script I'd written can identify the problem signs and the rooms they occur in. If so, we could:

-  provide that information from the download page for the mansion. Signs are usually optional and can be avoided if the player knows.

-  ensure that Leo has the info (and knows what he needs to do to fix it)

Personally, I'd hate to see any of the admins having to spend lots of time hunting and searching for these very difficult to spot problems. This issue sounds very familiar to me. I wish I could remember what was done initially.

I just tried part of Jacques Rev. Part I and it didn't crash. Some of the text is cut off of the longer signs, like mick reported, but they didn't cause any crashes. I'm still using Snow Leopard, so maybe it's a problem with Lion, I don't know.

There are indeed some crashing signs in JR 1.  Try the signs in room 16304.  A short but intented text.

Btw. I'm trying PP easy and there seems not to be any sign problem there.

The crashes weren't repeatable using the older version of the game. At least, I didn't think so. It was specific to MM HD, that why I asked, because it wouldn't be something that would be caught in the Mansion editor.

Brell, where is the first one you see that causes the crash?  Also, mick, which version of MM HD are you using? Are you using the latest version or an earlier one from the Beta testing?

I'm pretty embarrassed that I posted the info in the wrong mansion thread. My profound apologies to you all for the effort you had to put in to figure this out.

It is indeed Jack's Revenge 1. I'm glad I named the screenshot.

Also, Leo, I'm sorry I got your name wrong. I'm sorry I misattributed Palais Pompomrouge to you, too.

Latest version of MMHD, Brell. 1.0.1

The betas don't even open any more.  ;)

The one in 16304 didn't crash for me - none of the signs in the mansion have crashed so far, though I do see a bit of text "(null)" in the sign 16304 which probably wasn't intended.

My guess is that's the one that crashed for you. I have version 1.0.0 (and not the latest, but apparently *not* greatest). My guess is that the problem was fixed in 1.0.0, but somehow the fix was undone/rolled out when 1.0.1 was released. I'm playing the one I got from the Apple App Store, which hasn't been able to be patched for various unfortunate reasons.

I do remember this flaw now. I also remember emailing Vern about it, and thought it had been fixed. Probably a slight mix-up...

:(

Update OK - verified. I just downloaded the latest from the website, and it crashed for me in 1.0.1 where it didn't in 1.0.0. I wonder how many people got it from the website as opposed to those who got it from the App Store? I found the original email I sent to Vern about it (at least one of them) and sent it to him again with a bit more explanation. I cc'd you Brell.
