Title: Luris for HD
Post by Rob Seegel on 19.11.2012 at 13:33:35
Olle,

When we were converting mansions, Luris was one that I felt could be fixed fairly easily without too much work, but it would require some changes. There were two basic issues I saw.

  The Levers

Your mansion is certainly not the only mansion that buried levers in order to create a different visual presentation for some of your levers. Unfortunately, for reasons that really aren't that important at this point, the restrictions on levers have been tightened in the HD version.

In the game, there are four levers: brown, green, red/pink, and blue. By burying some of the levers you create the illusion that there are eight levers: two sets of four - ones with bases, and ones without (because the levers are buried below the "surface" that Jack walks on.

I worked with aquaMat and I created an alternate set of lever images. Which are lower, and do not have a base. I also replaced the special-purpose base that get's super-imposed on the regular base with a transparent graphic. There is also a slot at the bottom, so it will look as though this lever is sticking out of whatever surface it is "on". It looks *very* close to the buried appearance.

This is all well and good, but you still have a dilemma. In Luris, you have some levers that are buried and some that are not. If you want this to continue to be true, then you are going to have to decide which lever or levers should "appear" to be appeared, and which should not. From looking through your mansion, I believe brown would be a candidate for always being buried. That would be one graphic we would replace. You could opt to change out *all* the lever graphics, but you should take time to look over the various rooms. You have levers on vanishing and falling platforms - these normally sit on top  (probably because there was no way to "bury" them.

I will be happy to go through this room-by-room with you if you'd like. We can exchange info through the forum or through email if you like.

vanishing/retracting platforms

The other thing that might be an issue is something that Brell calls ghost platforms (thick and thin) I used to call the thick ones (lighsaper or glowing platfoms  that fade in and out)
the thin platforms are retracting panels. I believe you have a room where Jack jumps from one platform to land in another screen where there is another one. We will have to look at this, because it is also probably broken by the new HD version.

One of the platforms was left alone, and other one was change to reset itself each time Jack entered a room. I will provide more info inn follow-ups. As I said, I'm happy to help you fix things up, but there may have to be some minor redesigns. I doubt that the changes will take it too far from your original vision.

Let me know how you would like to proceed.

Hehe. I am actually not the only one that calls the vanishing platforms "ghost platforms".  The thin one is always off in the HD version but the thick one acts like it did in the original MM.  So, if the thick one is "on" in one room, it is also "on" in the next room.  I changed from thin to thick to fix a few issues in some mansions then they were updated.

Well, I figure it serves two purposes, then. If others call them the same thing then they will understand the reference. Otherwise, it gives me something trivial to tease you about. :)

Good. I'd forgotten which one had been altered in HD. That keeps me from having to look it up.

Well... I now have a version of Luris now with my modified levers, and a fix to two adjoining rooms that used "ghost platforms."

It needs to be tested again though. I suspect that there are other rooms that may need some fixing as well. I've started playing it again, but I'd forgotten how hard this mansion was. Keep in mind some things that may have been possible with the older game may not be possible with the HD version. I know that Vern also corrected some behavior around closed doors.

I have not uploaded my changes. I'm waiting on Olle to give me some direction on what he wants me to do.

I am testing Luris HD. I found that Jack can't slide down the pole where he is standing in the image.

Here is another problem and I can't continue the testing until this is corrected. The lever where Jack is standing is to low. He can't pull it.

Yes. Thanks i missed that lever. So, what do you think? Does the new lever image look reasonable? It's close to the same look as the "buried" levers. Too bad you did not have the room number displayed for that room.

Compared to the same lever in the original mansion it is placed a little low. I checked that out in  the Mansion Level Builder. Jack ca't pull it as it is now.

That's not what I meant. Yes, that particular lever is too low, because initially nearly all the levers in this mansion were "buried". To hide the lever's base, they were moved lower. So, I went through and raised the levers up so that they could be used and replaced the lever graphic with a custom one so it "looks" as though it is protruding from the ground. I must have missed that particular lever. That lever is actually in the same position as in the original, but the modified lever graphic makes it look lower.

I so totally misunderstood your question. I really can't see any difference between these levers to any other levers.
Room number is 11502.

Just found an old script. Wish I had run this before pushing out the mansion. Oh well. I'll fix all of them:

Scanning mansion room sprites...
10896 contains 1 buried lever
11301 contains 1 buried lever
11502 contains 1 buried lever
12699 contains 1 buried lever
13500 contains 1 buried lever
13501 contains 1 buried lever

What happened with the other room and the pole? Is Jack unable to jump? Is Jack prevented from taking the pole all the way down, and stops at the ledge? Just trying to understand the problem better since I've been unable to get there so far.

Jack can jump but doesn't slide down. He stays where he is standing in the image. Either he is to fat, the space between the green stone is to small or something else is stopping him.

Jack can indeed slide down the pole in the original and he SHOULD be able to do it as well in the HD.  There are many HD converted mansions with only one tile wide gap where Jack slides down poles as usual.

Hi All !
I'm enjoying the challenge of Luris again....playing it in HD as I cannot open the regular MM1 File, but having a serious problem with room 11502 and the lever on the top right.  It is buried and I cannot access it.
Just wondering if it was ever updated ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated  ;D
Thanks,

No, any updates would be on here available for download.
Sorry.

Thanks Semi-Native.

Maybe someone could help me then to figure out how to open the regular Luris...

I don't have a mansion Icon to open, all I have for it is what you see in the two below screenshots.

Thanks !

If you're running Snow Leopard or earlier, then just download the original Luris again. If you're Mt. Lion or later, the original MM won't run.

Hi Semi Native !  Thanks  :)
Yes, we are using Snow Leopard, and I've downloaded Luris a number of times now, but still there is no mansion Icon to open ?  I'm stuck now and can't play either version  :-[

thanks,

Hi SandyBean,

The problem was that the HD version zip file was placed twice. I just uploaded a replacement (I copied my original Luris), so download it again and it should work.

Let me know if you have a problem. Good luck!
:D

Great to see that Luris is not completely lost in updates and that someone appreciates it :)
If only someone could fix a builder for newer OS:s...
