A brief history of the game
At first there was Midnight Mansion, now often called MM1. This game package was for Mac only and contained 8 mansions, each on easy, normal and hard level. Above that there was a builder included, so that customers could design mansions themselves.
Then there was Midnight Mansion HD, now abbreviated as MM1 HD for both Mac and Windows. It contained the 3x8 mansions from MM1 plus 3x a bonus mansion: Tomb of Princes. All in high definition!
Actionsoft's latest game, Midnight Mansion 2: The Haunted Hills, includes 28 mansions with a lot of new features. The 8 built-in mansions have 3 difficulties along with 4 extra custom mansions. Yes indeed, the MM2 package also has an included builder to create mansions!

Custom mansions

In the past decades several customers started experimenting with the builders. Creating rooms. Talking about it on the Midnight Mansion Forums. Sending their own designed mansions to other board members to test them. And finally sending them to the administrators of MMF.
Result? Nearly 200 extra mansions are downloadable from these boards and some of them have over 100 rooms.
If you like to download custom mansions, go to the General Custom Mansions Area (Mac and Windows) where you find the lists with all the download spots.

Designing rules for a Catacombs-section
08.10.2007 at 20:16:15

Before starting a new section.
1° You need to ask for permission to start building. To avoid that more than one designer should be busy!
2° Ask for the CATACOMBS ORIGINAL file.
3° Meanwhile search for one or more beta-testers.
4° And read the instructions below very carefully.

Here are the MUSTs and DON'Ts for each designer of a new Catacombs-section.
1° The designing of the new section needs to be done with the received CATACOMBS ORIGINAL file. It is strictly forbidden to copy things from an other mansion into this CATACOMBS ORIGINAL file.

2° A section should have around 15 rooms and around 15 secrets.
3° Jack must be able to go back from the new section to the previous one.
4° In that previous section the exit door and the BBB with "To be continued ..." must be removed. Removing a BBB needs to be done in 2 steps: first delete the text in the editor and only then erase the brown sign.
5° Do never move the save pedestal from the previous section. Other small changes in the finishing room of the previous section are allowed.
6° Each secret must contain money. One single silver coin is already okay.
7° The section should have exactly $ 5.000. Is easy to check in the mansion builder at "Special / Mansion info".
8° The difficulty-degree is obliged: NORMAL. Not now and then, but always.
9° Each section may have only one save point, at the very end of the section.
10° The end of the section needs 4 features, best in this order: a BBB with the common info of the section, a save pedestal, a 2nd BBB with "To be continued ..." and an exit door. All money and secrets are supposed to be placed before those 4 last pieces.
11° Pre-launches or screenshots are not allowed.

And at the end:
1° Send a copy to the beta-testers. But make needed changes in the CATACOMBS ORIGINAL yourself.
2° Finally send the CATACOMBS ORIGINAL file back.

Yes and no. The contest had judges: Tobin, Jacob & Vern. But when building a mansion, for the Expansion Pack OR for Catacombs etc., it is best to find people to check if everything is okay in your mansion. And those persons are called: beta-testers. Because they are testing.

Catacombs Design Regeln

- ein BBB mit dem Text "End of section XX, designed by XXXX, Perfect score at this point XXX $"
- ein Save Podest
- ein BBB mit "To be continued...."   und
- eine EXIT Tür
11. Vor-Veröffentlichungen und Screenshots sind nicht erlaubt.

Und zu guter letzt:
2. Abschliessend sende die fertige CATACOMBS ORIGINAL Datei zurück (an die Administrators).
