A brief history of the game
At first there was Midnight Mansion, now often called MM1. This game package was for Mac only and contained 8 mansions, each on easy, normal and hard level. Above that there was a builder included, so that customers could design mansions themselves.
Then there was Midnight Mansion HD, now abbreviated as MM1 HD for both Mac and Windows. It contained the 3x8 mansions from MM1 plus 3x a bonus mansion: Tomb of Princes. All in high definition!
Actionsoft's latest game, Midnight Mansion 2: The Haunted Hills, includes 28 mansions with a lot of new features. The 8 built-in mansions have 3 difficulties along with 4 extra custom mansions. Yes indeed, the MM2 package also has an included builder to create mansions!

Custom mansions

In the past decades several customers started experimenting with the builders. Creating rooms. Talking about it on the Midnight Mansion Forums. Sending their own designed mansions to other board members to test them. And finally sending them to the administrators of MMF.
Result? Nearly 200 extra mansions are downloadable from these boards and some of them have over 100 rooms.
If you like to download custom mansions, go to the General Custom Mansions Area (Mac and Windows) where you find the lists with all the download spots.

Zapper beams

They appear to be quite unpopular, yet the game wouldn't be the same without them. They can be extremely frustrating, but so rewarding when you beat them. They can turn out to be much harder than intended, but they look so nice in a room!

What's your opinion?

The Zapper Beams are good in the mansions for explore and so...  They make the mansion a little harder, and that's the best one in a mansion, or not? Cool

That makes mansions very nice indeed  Cheesy

However, if you run into a creature, the danger disappears. With zapper beams, if you are not careful, you can waste all your extra lives and not progress at all!

By and large, I like them, there are beautiful electric puzzles. Still, I'm happy Psychotronic's Thunderstorm is optional  Smiley

Everything has to do about the way those zappers are used.

E.g. in the EASY section of
Midnight Mazes and Monsters
there is a 4-room maze with zappers. But they shouldn't give any problem, as long as you play carefully and stay concentrated. And the legendary thunderstorm in
A Curious Observatory
I can appreciate, because in a matter of fact it is a puzzle that one needs to solve.

But getting through irregular working beams in combination with red birds or whatever ... Please no. Made the
Temple of the Moon
too tough for me.

Yes, there's a frustration factor which you don't have with other features.

A zapper beam strike then? Would that be like, no zapper at all or the opposite, a zapper-mania?  Grin

I am looking forward to Matari's laser-mansion. Hope she doesn't take our comments too serious. Every style is okay for me. And when a mansion seems to be too difficult for me, then it is what it is. Because of zapperbeams, red birds, ... doesn't matter at all.

And to say it with MMaM-terminology: difficulties in a mansion make your playingskills better.

The best attitude when you really want a strike is: let Jack play yoyo at the start of an electric energy installation, take a screenshot of it and send it as spam to the designer. Wink Grin Grin

I am not so fond of zapper beams and red birds although, of course, I have used them in my mansions.  But sometimes there is a trick to play the beams, e.g. at least at one place in Arfrg.  And there are places where it is a question of exact timing, like in Doldrum Dungeon.

Wow - my comment on a possible laser mansion has resulted in a lot of opinions - obviously zappers are difficult for everyone...

if I do go ahead I PROMISE not to use a red bird in combination with zappers anywhere in the mansion - those red birds - another pet hate of mine...

What about the deadly fish-and-ghost platforms combination?

Roll Eyes

Finally it makes you wonder if we don't prefer large empty rooms with only solid floor and money Wink
