A brief history of the game
At first there was Midnight Mansion, now often called MM1. This game package was for Mac only and contained 8 mansions, each on easy, normal and hard level. Above that there was a builder included, so that customers could design mansions themselves.
Then there was Midnight Mansion HD, now abbreviated as MM1 HD for both Mac and Windows. It contained the 3x8 mansions from MM1 plus 3x a bonus mansion: Tomb of Princes. All in high definition!
Actionsoft's latest game, Midnight Mansion 2: The Haunted Hills, includes 28 mansions with a lot of new features. The 8 built-in mansions have 3 difficulties along with 4 extra custom mansions. Yes indeed, the MM2 package also has an included builder to create mansions!

Custom mansions

In the past decades several customers started experimenting with the builders. Creating rooms. Talking about it on the Midnight Mansion Forums. Sending their own designed mansions to other board members to test them. And finally sending them to the administrators of MMF.
Result? Nearly 200 extra mansions are downloadable from these boards and some of them have over 100 rooms.
If you like to download custom mansions, go to the General Custom Mansions Area (Mac and Windows) where you find the lists with all the download spots.

Broken ladder
03.12.2010 at 04:56:22

In 18092, the ladder is broken. Jack can't climb down without falling to death.

I don't know why this is an issue all of a sudden, but this has happened in some other custom MM1 mansions.

Is this at the top of the ladder.  I mean is Jack coming from the room above?

Yes, brell.  Wasn't it you that had to fix some ladders, too?

I really don't understand this either!

This ladder always worked perfectly (otherwise noone could have finished JUMP, ever!) - and now doesn't anymore.

I remeber that there have been some changes made by Vern as to how ladders behave - but I don't remember the details.
And  BTW, I'm absolutely no fan opf changes that may cause old mansions to suddenly behave differently !

However - here's what I did:
The ladder - as it was - had 2 ladder tiles with "gaps" in them, right next to another - this caused Jack's fall, apparantly.

So I have now changed the left of those "gap-tiles" into a normal ladder tile (see circled area in PIC below, upper left corner)  - et voilà: Jack doesn't fall anymore !!

But please don't ask me what it was that caused this ladder problem - or to be more precise: what was it that caused Vern to change the behaviour of some ladder tiles ??!?   Huh   Undecided

I will send an update of JUMP to Brell later today or tomorrow.

PostScriptum to my last post (below):

It gets even stranger !!
After I had replaced the left "gap-tile" (as described below), I had -of course- tried it out - and had managed to climb the ladder up + back down twice WITHOUT my Jack falling to death.
However, afterwards I tried it again, from the room above - and this time he fell again!!!

So I found out that changing just the left gap-tile wasn't enough - the right gap-tile still causes Jack to die (at least about 1 out of 4 times !).
This is something I really DISLIKE - because I have very often used those "gap-tiles" in my ladder-designs to give the ladders an old, rotten, "almost-broken" look - which is something which has always contributed a lot to the overall look of my rooms.
(Those of you who know my mansions are aware of my love of detail, especially as far as the optical side is concerned !)

I'd never use a ladder whose tiles are all the same over the whole length - same with columns, or backgrounds etc. I always love a bit of irregularity, 'cause that makes it look 'more real' !!

So to know that I now can never use those "gap-tiles" again, is very frustrating!
Also I'm sure, I have used them in at least 80 % of my mansions.... and I really don't feel much like going through all of them to look for broken ladders.... and I don't have the time for that, either!

I strongly vote for getting the old ladder-behaviour back !!

BTW, my solution for the problem in JUMP now, is:
I have moved the gap-tile two units further down - to keep the "old + broken ladder look", but have Jack fall on his feet alive!
Please see pic below.

Meanwhile in Berlin:

If what I said yesterday about those "gap-tiles" in ladders is true, I figured there must be a whole lot of other rooms in my mansions that have ladders which are suddenly malfunctioning.

So I checked "The Birdcage" (I had to start somewhere).
And indeed - in room 14292 I found a ladder that had 2 "gap-tiles", similar to the situation in JUMP! discussed below.  (See pic attached)

However, when I tested the room, my Jack could climb and descend that ladder without any bodily harm - just as it was intended.

So - can anybody (Vern?) tell me why the ladder in JUMP! resulted in a deadly fall, even after there was only 1 "gap-tile" left - whereas the ladder in The Birdcage doesn't harm Jack at all ??!?

I don't get it.

PS:
I also checked "The Complex" - where are a quite a few ladders, several of which feature at least tiny gaps. NONE of them caused Jack to die !

Strange!  This seems to apply to SOME custom mansions but not all.  Perhaps it is only one kind of ladder tile that is malfunctioning?
