A brief history of the game
At first there was Midnight Mansion, now often called MM1. This game package was for Mac only and contained 8 mansions, each on easy, normal and hard level. Above that there was a builder included, so that customers could design mansions themselves.
Then there was Midnight Mansion HD, now abbreviated as MM1 HD for both Mac and Windows. It contained the 3x8 mansions from MM1 plus 3x a bonus mansion: Tomb of Princes. All in high definition!
Actionsoft's latest game, Midnight Mansion 2: The Haunted Hills, includes 28 mansions with a lot of new features. The 8 built-in mansions have 3 difficulties along with 4 extra custom mansions. Yes indeed, the MM2 package also has an included builder to create mansions!

Custom mansions

In the past decades several customers started experimenting with the builders. Creating rooms. Talking about it on the Midnight Mansion Forums. Sending their own designed mansions to other board members to test them. And finally sending them to the administrators of MMF.
Result? Nearly 200 extra mansions are downloadable from these boards and some of them have over 100 rooms.
If you like to download custom mansions, go to the General Custom Mansions Area (Mac and Windows) where you find the lists with all the download spots.

MM runs smoothly on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard server in VMware Fusion
31.07.2022 at 18:36:16

Many years ago I told you in this thread how I managed to get MM to run on Snow Leopard server in VirtualBox.  The only problem was (and is) that the game lags a little which makes it very hard to play in any other mode than easy.  Well, I have come across another better (but a little more complex) solution.  I am now using VMware Fusion to boot Mac OS 10.5 Leopard server and it runs MM very smoothly with no lags.  The installation is easy but getting the sound to work is a bit tricky.
The host is MacBook pro 13" late 2017 running MacOS Montery 12.4

Here is a guide for those interested:

1. Download and install VMware Fusion. Go to this page and register the free version to the right.  You will be led through some tedious field fillings (name, email, password etc) but eventually you will get an six digit activation code for your new account sent to the email address you provided.  Fill in the code in the form and you will get a registration key for your copy of the VMware application.
2. Download the 10.5 server from this page:
   a) The ISO image (it will have the ending .cdr don't worry about that). DO NOT DEVELOPE THIS FILE AT ALL!
   b) The Rich text Format (for the serial number needed for installation of the server).
3. Run VMware (enter the registration key when prompted) and drag the ISO image ending with .cdr onto the window (see 1. image). Click continue.
4. You will get another window (see 2. image). Just click Finish here and click Save on the next window.  You will get a small window with info about Mitigations. Just press OK.
5. The installation will start.  Just follow the screen instructions.  Eventually you will be asked for the serial number, open the RTF and use the number provided there.
6. When the server is up and running, you should install the VMware tools, which is on the VMware menubar (see 3. attachment, greyed out because I have already used it - should be selectable in your vm) but actually installs onto the Leopard server.

I must start a new message to be able to use more attachments

7. Shut down the server but leave the VM on.  Now choose settings from the Virtual Machie menubar (see 1. attachment).
8. Select Processors and memory and increase the memory up to 2048 Mb.
9. Click on Add device in the top right corner of the Setting window.  Select the Sound card.  Leave Output and Input devices as they are and just add the card.

Now comes the tricky part.

10. Run  the server again.  In the server (and NOT on the host), open Safari, go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/vmsvga2/ and download the VMsvga2 file.
11. Install the package into the server.
12. Shut down the server and VMware Fusion.
13. Open your user folder on your Mac and navigate to the Virtual Machines folder. Open that folder and you should see your newly created server as a file with the ending .vmwarevm (see 2. attachment).  For safety reasons you should make a backup copy of this file now.
14. Right-click on that file and choose "Show Package Contents". You should see something like in the third attachment below.
15. Right-click on the Mac OS X Server 10.5.vmx file and choose "Open with TextEdit".
16. Scroll all the way down until you see the line "sound.virtualDev = "hdaudio"".
17. Change hdaudio to es1371 and do NOT remove the quotation marks!
18. Save the file.
19. Run Vmware again and boot the server.  You should have sound now.  If not, try to remove and reinstall the sound card.

Hope this works for you all Smiley

One more thing:
If you want to disable Side channels mitigations, with the Server shut down, open Settings from the Virtual machines menu and select Advanced.  Then you can tick into the Disable box (not possible if the server is running).

It seems people are having some trouble with:

Here are further details:
a) When you go that page above and choose the free version to the right, you will be asked to create an account (see attachment).  Choose "Create account", fill in your first and last name and your email. Answer "no" to the question "are you a VMware partner?" and hit Continue.
b) You vill be taken to a tedious fill-in-many-fields page (see attachment with the uppermost part of that page).  You must fill every field marked with a red asterix.  Regarding your firm and such stuff, just put in anything you want.  When you're finished, just hit the button at the bottom of the page.
c) The next page is the activation page of your profile and NOT the VMware app.  See attachment.  You will see the line "An email with an authentication code has been sent to your email, blabla@bla.whatever. This code will be valid for 20 minutes."  Now open your email. You will get a SIX digit code which you put into the SIX digit form on the page just below the sentence "Enter the activation code below to complete your activation."  Then hit the "Verify code" button.  After that you will get the registration key for the VMware Fusion app.

Hope this works

Unfortunately, VMware 12.x won't run on M2 based computers and version 13.0 is not free.  Furthermore, any virtual machines based on old systems won't run either.

It doesn't seem to work on M1 machines either... too bad they are upgrading hardware without reconsidering the MM compatibility...

Maybe we should inform Vern so he can complain directly to Apple ...
